"It's been very hectic so far this summer," said Chris Smelley. "I've had a lot of catching up to do on a few things the past couple of weeks. I have attended a few camps, and I am playing summer baseball. Our baseball team is traveling to Orlando for the National AAU baseball tournament. We will spend about a week down there."
LSU, Ole Miss, Tulane, and Memphis have offered the Alabama quarterback. Smelley has attended three summer camps seeking scholarship offers.
"I have been to Clemson, Alabama, and Ole Miss for camps this summer. Clemson was the last camp I attended. Jeff Ogren and I both went to the camp last Monday for one day," said Smelley.
"The camp went really good. Coach Spence (quarterback coach) seemed to really like me. He told me they would probably offer me soon. Coach Spence is a tough coach. He gets after you. I really like that," added Smelley.
Growing up a few miles from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Smelley was anxious to go to the Alabama campus for the Tide's senior camp held June 12th.
"I didn't think I had my best day at Alabama," Smelley said. "I was in Auburn the night before, and I got home late that night. I spoke with Coach Shula and Coach Rader. They said they were not worried. They said I did fine. They want me to come back one day and throw for them again. I am usually pretty hard on myself."
Four star receiver Tim Hawthorne was in attendance with Smelley at the Tide's camp.
"There were a couple of good quarterbacks at the camp. I thought Chris Smelley was the best out of the group," Hawthorne commented after the camp.
Smelley had a better day in Oxford, and it was a worthy performance. The Rebels liked what they saw.
"I really liked working with Coach Mazzone. He is a great guy. I really enjoyed myself at their camp. I received the offer from them a while back," said Smelley.
LSU was the first school to extend an offer to Smelley, but the Tigers have received a quarterback commitment from Alex Cate (#4 quarterback in country by Scout.com).
Smelley said, "I am going to the LSU camp the end of July. Coach Fisher told me they received a quarterback commitment, but they were willing to take two. He said they still want me. That is still going to be an option for me."
When asked favorites Smelley replied, "Right now my favorites are Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Clemson. That list is in no particular order. I don't have an overall favorite."
Smelley talks about his favorites.
Auburn: "The main reason I like Auburn is Coach Al Borges. He is one of the most like-able coaches I have been around. They have also had one of the best teams in the country the past few years."
Alabama: "It's close to home. All my family lives around here. It would really affect my decision if Alabama were to offer me."
Clemson: "I like the the campus, the environment, and the atmosphere."
Ole Miss: "I really love the campus."
Smelley will travel to Orlando this week for baseball and Baton Rouge the last week of July for football. Those are the last two trips scheduled on his calendar as he prepares for his senior season of football.
