Tigers Land Eighth Verbal Commitment

The Clemson Tigers picked up their eighth verbal commitment earlier today when Alabama native Jeffery Ogren gave his pledge to the Clemson coaching staff.

Ogren is the first wide receiver to commit to the Tigers in the 2006 recruiting class.

"I am committed to Clemson. Clemson has a good atmosphere. It's a good place to be," Ogren told CUTigers.com Thursday evening.

Coach Swinney was thrilled to hear the news. "I called Coach Swinney and told him. He said it was a burden off his chest. He was thrilled.

"I talked to two schools, Auburn and Clemson, for a long time. I evaluated everything. I hoped to decide before my senior year. I wasn't going to know from Auburn until yesterday whether they would offer. When I talked to Coach Knox from Auburn yesterday, he said they would not know until November. He said there was a 50/50 chance. That was a little disappointing."

The American Christian Academy standout wanted to make sure he didn't wait too long. "The situation with Clemson was they said they already had two receivers committed and they were only going to take three. They also said they have another one that may be close so I didn't want to lose that last spot."

How firm is Ogren's commitment to the Tigers? "Right now it's pretty firm. Right now there is no other school that I would go to if they offered. I might take some official visits just to see other schools, but right now its Clemson," said the Alabama native.

Ogren racked up 1,345 yards receiving with 18 touchdowns as a junior. Clemson is also heavily involved with Ogren's teammate, QB Chris Smelley.

"We have been talking about going to the same college for a while," Ogren said. We have been playing together for a long time, and we think it would be great. We could start something really good somewhere. It could be to our advantage. It could be awesome if we played together."

We will continue to keep you updated on this outstanding receiver from Alabama, right up through signing day 2006.
