A Brent Schaeffer Update

Former Tennessee standout QB Brent Schaeffer is very close to announcing where he will transfer.

CUTigers.com caught up with Brent Schaeffer's mother, Chandra Schaeffer on Wednesday afternoon to get the latest on the former Tennessee quarterback and his decision to transfer to another school.

"He has not made his final decision yet," Mrs. Schaeffer said when reached by telephone. "He doesn't have long. We know that. But it will be this week."

And what chance do the Tigers have of landing the prize quarterback? "They are pretty high. I would say right now it is Clemson," she responded.

"He will make his decision public in the next three or four days."

Schaeffer battled fellow freshman Erik Ainge for the starting quarterback position last year at Tennessee, but both got hurt and failed to finish the season.

Ironically, Schaeffer sustained a broken collarbone against South Carolina in October.

The former Deerfield Beach (Fla.) standout became the first true freshman to start at quarterback in a Southeastern Conference opener since 1945. He also started the next two games before Ainge gained the starting role.

Schaeffer is more of a running quarterback than the prototypical three-step passer. Last season, he completed 18-of-37 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran 33 times and scored one touchdown.
