One of the top defensive prospects from the Palmetto State next season will be strong safety/ linebacker Maurice Nelson. Nelson, from Sumter (SC) Crestwood, plays both positions in high school.
"Speed is the one thing that sets him apart on the football field," said Crestwood Head Coach Keith Crowley. "Maurice is a determined kid that works hard. He is our leader. Maurice could play either position in college. It just depends on the school. He is that versatile."
Last season as a junior, Nelson recorded 141 tackles and 5 sacks. "I think I like strong safety a little better," said Nelson. "I like playing in coverage but I also love to use my speed and blitz. I like to get after it. When I make a big hit, it is a hit. You will know."
Nelson's older brother, Rosevelt, is a red-shirt freshman at Clemson. Do the Tigers have the best shot at landing him? "I am pretty open right now. I like Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland and NC State. I am looking at coaching staffs and for a chance to win a National Championship. I would love to play with my brother but I have to wait and see what is best for me."
