Whitehurst Ready to Rebound

"Let's get tested right now. We are ready to play. This is as good a test as you can ask for," said Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst in regards to Saturday's season opener against 17th ranked Texas A&M.

It's the first game of your senior year Saturday night against Texas A&M. Does it feel any different this time around?
Whitehurst: Not really. I think some people do, but I'm not one of those guys. It kind of hits me when it's all over. But this is important. It's business time now and we are definitely approaching it like that.

What do you remember about last year's game?
Whitehurst: They are a physical football team. They are tough. They come after you. Other than that... it's a new year. I know they have a lot of players back. We've got an entirely different game plan this year. We are going to be attacking different things, so hopefully we can capitalize on some of those.

How is this offense progressing under a first-year offensive coordinator?
Whitehurst: We are getting better and better as the season goes along. We are definitely not ready to go out there and dominate right now. Hopefully by the end we can go out there and move the ball real efficiently. But we are planning on going out there, moving the football, scoring points and beating these guys.

How important is it for this team to go out there and get that first win against Texas A&M?
Whitehurst: It would be nice to out there and get a win. It would kind of bury the hatchet from last year. Either way, you have to take each game one at a time. You can't put too much importance on just one game.

Have you learned from what happened last year and to try and pick and choose when to take your shots?
Whitehurst: I hope so. I think it's a gradual process. You don't make the perfect decision every single time. You are too aggressive sometimes, and too cautious on others. You have to be middle of the road and take the shots when they are there. It's a gradual process but I think we've made strides in the right direction.

Do you like opening with a nationally ranked team right off the bat?
Whitehurst: Why not? Let's get tested right now. We are ready to play. This is as good a test as you can ask for.
