Roy's Picks: Week No. 3

A new column from publisher Roy Philpott previewing this weekend's games.

No. 13 Miami at No. 20 Clemson (Saturday, 3:30 PM ABC)
The outcome of this game rests squarely on the shoulders of Miami QB Kyle Wright. If Wright has all day to throw and finds his receivers downfield - Miami wins. If Clemson gets pressure on Wright and keeps him off-balance throughout the game - Clemson wins. The Tigers have lost just two games in the last two years at home. Clemson wins another nail biter at home.

Roy's Pick: Clemson +7; Clemson Straight Up

Alabama at South Carolina (Saturday, 3:30 PM CBS)
This game will say a lot about the direction of South Carolina's season. Blake Mitchell has turned the corner as the Gamecocks' starting quarterback, but does he have enough support on the ground to win in the SEC? Right now, the answer is no.

Roy's Pick: Alabama (-2); Alabama Straight Up

No. 8 Florida State at No. 17 Boston College (Saturday, 7:45 PM ESPN)
In what has to be one of the more intriguing games of the weekend, FSU travels to new ACC foe Boston College in an early season showdown for conference supremecy. FSU's team speed on defense keeps the Eagles in check.

Roy's Pick: Florida State (-1.5); Florida State Straight Up

No. 5 Tennessee at No. 6 Florida (Saturday, 8:00 PM CBS)
Don't be fooled by the Vols' struggles against UAB in their season opener. Tennessee has enough talent to challenge for an SEC Championship this year. In addition, the Vols have had the Gators' number of late, winning three out of the last four games between the two schools, including a 30-28 victory last year. That trend will continue in '05 behind the strong running of Gerald Riggs and a stingy defense that will keep pressure on QB Chris Leak.

Roy's Pick: Tennessee (+6.5); Tennessee Straight Up

Wisconsin at North Carolina (Saturday, 7:00 PM ESPN-2)
The Heels performed admirably last weekend against Georgia Tech, but Wisconsin is too big and too physical to expect a repeat performance this weekend. The Badgers run wild in a double-digit win in Chapel Hill.

Roy's Pick: Wisconsin (-3); Wisconsin Straight Up

Updated Record: Straight Up: 7-3; Spread: 6-4 Top Stories
