Focus: The Ground Game
Tommy Bowden Monday Comments (8:35)
BC RUN DEFENSE: After rushing for just 90 total yards against Miami last Saturday, the Clemson ground game won't find it much easier against 25th ranked Boston College this weekend.
The Eagles come into Saturday's game ranked third in the nation against the run.
"That's pretty good," Clemson head coach Bowden said Monday. "Their inside guy, I think they list him as 331 at 6-1. Florida State was as impressed with him as the other guy (potential first round draft pick DE Mathias Kiwanuka ). Their linebackers are really really physical players.
"They, like most defensive coordinators are going to try to stop the run first. Everybody does it. Right now they are third in the nation."
Of the Tigers' 90 rushing yards against Miami, most of that came on one play - a long run by quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. Whitehurst finished the game leading the Tigers in rushing with 58 total yards.
Running backs James Davis and Reggie Merriweather combined for just 20 rushing yards on 15 attempts.
COLEMAN TO PLAY MORE? Former running back Duane Coleman was officially listed as seeing action on eight snaps at cornerback Saturday against Miami.
Tommy Bowden said Monday evening that those numbers could increase as the year goes on.
"I thought he did a pretty good job. I think he'll have a really good opportunity to help us," Bowden said.
QUICK HITS: There are no personnel changes to report after the Miami game. ... DT Trey Tate (groin) and DT Rashaad Jackson (shoulder) both practiced in a yellow jersey today but both should play against Boston College. ... Bowden said that morale of the team Monday was "pretty good." He also noted to the team the importance of not yet having a division loss. ... Bowden said that he is not yet sure if Durrell Barry will play Saturday. (Barry has not yet played this season and was expected to redshirt before Cole Downer's season ending surgery on Saturday.) ... Bowden also wants more production from his punt team.
