Should Chason, who is has Clemson ranked as 104th out of 119 Division I teams in net punting, stumble against Boston College, he'll have to fight all over again for the starting job.
"I think I'm probably going to open it up based on this game's performance," Bowden said. "I'll open it or not open based on this performance here. It's not fair to the other guys that are out there competing for a position."
The Tigers are averaging a horrid 31.64 yards per punt and 28.86 in net punting, which ranks last in the ACC.
Stephen Furr would be the likely replacement.
With both quarterbacks for the Eagles being so similar in styles, Bowden said it really doesn't matter which one plays. Both are tall (6-foot-5), with decent mobility and pocket passers.
So, should starter Quinton Porter's sprained right ankle prevent him from playing, Matt Ryan will get the nod.
"What I saw that second-team quarterback do in the last drive against Florida State, to me it's a moot point (which one starts)," Bowden said. "He was in a big game on national TV and took them right down the field. Once I saw that, it don't make any difference which one goes."
Tight end Cole Downer is expected to be released from the hospital Friday after undergoing an emergency surgery to remove his spleen late Saturday night. … For the first time this season, Clemson will wear orange shirts and white pants for Saturday's game against the Eagles. The Tigers are 20-6 with that combination under Bowden. …
Expect to see Duane Coleman on the field a lot more this week at cornerback. The converted tailback saw very limited action last week against Miami (eight total snaps).
"Every time I get another rep, I get more and more comfortable," he said. "My very first play, I was real nervous. I was like I hope they don't try me deep. I just don't want to get beat deep and get the other 10 guys mad at you."
