QB Russell Hemby Names a Favorite

QB Russell Hemby, brother of Clemson defensive back Ryan Hemby, and rising senior at Orangeburg-Wilkerson High School, has named his current leader. Hemby will likely be one of the more sought after dual-threat quarterbacks in the state of South Carolina next year.

Russell Hemby is likely one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks returning in the southeast next season. Hemby goes to Orangeburg-Wilkerson, the former high school of Clemson great Woody Dantzler, so you know the Tigers have been involved.

Last season, Hemby completed 188 of 305 passes (61%) for 1825 yards and 16 touchdowns through the air, and ran for an additional 400 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground.

Coach Tommy Brown had a chance to sit down and talk with InsideCarolina recently, and here is what he had to say about one of the top returning quarterbacks in South Carolina:

"Russell is blessed with a lot of talent. I have seen a number of articles comparing Russell to Woody Dantzler. Woody set up his passing game with the run, excelling at the short passing game. Russell, on the other hand, has a strong arm and likes to throw the deep ball. He has very good running skills, but only runs when he has no other option. He is mature, strong and ready to play the game at the Division I-A level."

Russell has heard from several schools including: Clemson, Duke, East Carolina, Georgia, LSU, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, along with others.

Hemby is a smart kid, on and off the field, as he projects as a full qualifier with a GPA over 3.5 and an SAT score of over 1000.

He has not received any offers at this time. Russell says despite the fact that many recruiting sites say he is a lock for Clemson or South Carolina, his favorite is the Tar Heels.

Russell attended the Nike Camp in Athens this past weekend and registered the following numbers:

Height: 6'1"
Weight: 199.6 lbs
Vertical: 28"
40: 4.6
Bench: 21 reps at 185 lbs

He plans to attend the Clemson, North Carolina, and South Carolina day camps this summer, as well as the Furman Quarterback Camp. We will continue to keep you updated on Russell Hemby as we receive more information throughout the summer.
