Junior DE One to Watch

COLUMBIA - Cheraw junior defensive end Clifton Matthews had an impressive state championship game that showed why he will be one of the top defensive linemen in the Palmetto state next year. CUTigers.com introduces the talented defender in this recruiting update.

6-5, 225 pound defensive end prospect Clifton Matthews spent most of Saturday afternoon in the backfield of Batesburg-Leesville, but it wasn't enough to pull out a victory for the Cheraw Braves in the Class 2A state championship game. "I was trying my best, but I just couldn't find my game. It just wasn't there," Matthews told CUTigers.com after the game.

While the Braves ended up losing the game, 27-21, Harris has plenty to look forward to during his senior season, not to mention the recruiting process.

Matthews is already hearing from several schools and he expects to increase after Saturday's game. "Right now, I am hearing from Clemson, Duke, North Carolina State and South Carolina State. I don't have any offers yet. I am just getting a lot of mail right now," he said.

The talented athlete plays tight end as well as defensive end for Cheraw. "Coach Swinney is recruiting me for Clemson. They are looking at me for defensive end. All the schools are," Harris said.

While his summer camp plans are months away, Harris does plan on camping at Clemson. "I don't know where I will camp just yet. I know I will go to some. I would like to camp at Clemson," he added.
