Scouting Report: DB Byron Maxwell

An in-depth look at Clemson verbal commitment Byron Maxwell.

DB Byron Maxwell
6-1, 180, 4.4
Fort Dorchester High School
North Charleston, South Carolina

Strengths: Maxwell is a big, physical corner. He has good/great speed. He is strong enough to get off blocks and is excellent in run support. Plays the ball well and has good flexibility in his hips that allows him to turn and cover. High talent level. Likes to hit.

Weaknesses: As a tall corner, Maxwell has to learn to play low and not stand up in coverage as he was able to do on the high school level. This will allow him to get in and out of his breaks and stay with shifty receivers.

Film Evaluation: The sky is the limit for Byron Maxwell. He shows good speed on film and a great break on the ball. If Ricky Sapp was made to play Vic Koenning's bandit position, then Maxwell is the prototypical zone corner that Koenning is looking for. In fact, had he been healthy, Maxwell would have entered the Shrine Bowl week competing with Ricky Sap and Clifton Geathers for the top spot in the state of South Carolina. Because of his ACL injury, Crezdon Butler will have a better chance to play early, but in the end Maxwell is the more talented corner.
