6-6, 280 pound offensive line prospect David Smith decided today at lunch that he was ready to pull the trigger on a verbal commitment to Clemson University.
"Really it was at lunch I made my decision to go ahead (and commit)," Smith told CUTigers.com. "I asked my coach how I would go about committing to Clemson. He called coach Bowden but he was not in his office. He left a message. Tonight I talked with coach Blackwell and told him I wanted to come to Clemson. He was in awe. He was amazed. He said he was about to jump out of his seat.
"It went according to plan. I am glad I finally did it. I have been thinking about it a lot for a while. I have been praying about it. Clemson is definitely the place I want to be."
Why did the prize recruit decide Clemson was the best school for him a full year before National Signing Day?
Good question, and not surprisingly, Smith has a good answer.
"You know I have been thinking about them a lot," he said. "I was at the Florida State game last year. After the game I decided I needed to dig deeper into Clemson and see what they have for me. As I looked at them I decided they have everything for me. They are ranked No. 2 in the nation for graduation rate of football players.
"I know if I go to Clemson I will graduate with my degree and be prepared for life. I love football, but you have to have the grades as well."
The Tigers were the first school to offer the Palmetto standout. "Clemson was my only offer so far. I have had other schools look at me. Clemson is the only offer I needed though," Smith said.
When asked how firm his commitment is with the Tigers, Smith responded, "I think it is a done deal. I love Clemson. I am ready to be in orange."
Smith is also familiar with the offensive system that the Tigers run under second-year coordinator Rob Spence. "Yeah I like the offensive setup at Clemson," he added. "They run the same offense that we run at my school. I think I can come in and help them right away. I like the depth chart and believe I will have a good opportunity to play early."
