Nickelberry Accepts Head Coaching Position

One of the best recruiters coordinators the Clemson basketball program has had is no longer with the team. has learned that assistant basketball coach Kevin Nickelberry accepted the head coaching job this morning at Hampton University.

Simply put, it's a big loss for the Tigers. Nickelberry has been routinely named one of the top 20 recruiters in Division I.

In his stint at Clemson, Nickelberry has landed the Tigers eight top 100 ranked players that have either played for the Tigers or committed to do so.

The three years he spent with Clemson is the longest he's ever spent with one team, that's because other schools routinely upped the ante for him to join their program.

Nickelberry, 41, came close to leaving the Tigers at the end of last season. Syracuse University offered him a substantial raise to become the Orangemen's recruiting coordinator, but like all the others since he joined Oliver Purnell, he turned it down.

Purnell also said this shouldn't alter James Mays decision to come back to Clemson.

"We still have every indication that James Mays will be returning this summer," he said.

Stay tuned to throughout the day for updates and comments from those involved with the basketball program. Top Stories
