While Lance Thomas and Darrell Arthur are the hottest high school recruits on the planet, Devan Downey is the best transfer on the board. The 5-foot-10 point guard averaged 11 points a game and led the Cincinnati Bearcats in assists and steals. As a high school senior, he was ranked No. 40 in 2005 by Scout.com.
Downey, when reached Monday afternoon, was still in Cincinnati taking classes. "I'm still here but I'm just weighing my options to see who is really interested in me," Downey told Scout.com.
The point guard has met with head coach Mick Cronin and deemed it a "possibility" but "not strong" that he would remain.
The Bearcats have the right of refusal with Downey in terms of where he can transfer. South Carolina and Clemson have already asked for his release.
Downey wouldn't specify who he submitted to Cincinnati as potential transfer suitors but did give some indications. "All the schools around South Carolina and Georgia area (on the list). That was my way of putting it out there."
However, Cincinnati has the right to refuse schools. For instance, Downey will not be released to Wake Forest and there could be other schools on the non-release list.
"The way this all changed up is that he has to let them know what school's he's interested in before they send the release," Dion Bethea, Downey's AAU coach, said. "They have to go through the compliance office if they aren't on Devan's (original) list."
Downey wouldn't mind inching closer back to his South Carolina residence. "It would be good to get closer to home. I want to go somewhere that is going to play fast paced and have some players around me."
