Tigers' Skid Hits Four

CLEMSON – As the top of the seventh got started, pitcher P.J. Zocchi was prepared to stroll to the mound and attempt to keep his two-run lead intact. Instead, he was relieved by Steve Richard.

And that's when it all fell apart.

In that seventh inning Richard managed just two outs, while giving up five hits, four earned runs and the lead, and Furman went on to get the 5-4 victory over the Tigers Wednesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The loss is the fourth straight for No. 6 Clemson (27-12), with the last two coming to smaller instate schools. Winthrop beat the Tigers Tuesday night.

"We didn't relief pitch," Clemson coach Jack Leggett said. "When we made the change, we didn't get much done there. …

(Zocchi) was up around 95 pitches and that's about all he's going to go."

Zocchi, a sophomore, said he had plenty more pitches left in his right arm.

He said he had thrown only 73 pitches, not 95. A Clemson statistician had Zocchi with 72 pitches.

"I wanted to stay in for the seventh, but they told me wanted to save me for relief in the weekend (at Boston College)," Zocchi said.

Over his last two outings, Richard (0-1) has pitched four innings, given up eight hits and seven runs, while walking two.

"Our right-handed relief pitching is what our problem is," Leggett said. "We haven't had any consistency out of our many guys there. Our left-handed relief pitching has been pretty good. … We need those other guys to step up and they haven't been doing it."

In the top of the eighth, Clemson had runners on first and second with no outs, when Furman (24-11) brought in closer Nick Hollstegge to try and stop the bleeding.

The first batter he faced was Tigers catcher Adrian Casanova, who squared to bunt on the first two pitches, neither of which he put into play and resulted in strikes.

Leggett kept the bunt signal on, but Casanova couldn't do the job as he fouled off a pitch for a strikeout, which sent several of the Clemson fans in the stands into a tizzy toward Leggett and Casanova.

Pinch hitter Ben Hall then struck out before Brad Chalked walked to load the bases. Tyler Colvin then smoked a line drive that was snared by first baseman Case Cassedy to end the inning.

Hollstegge struck out the first two hitters in the ninth, before getting Tyler Harbin, who had hit a home run in the sixth, to fly out innocently to left field to end the game.

"Right now, we're a little down," Zocchi said. "We go day-by-day. We're going to flush this out of our system."
