DB Darius Gaither
Fairfield-Central High School
Winnsboro, South Carolina

STATS: Missed much of his senior season due to a high ankle sprain, but still rushed for 500 yards and eight touchdowns...as a junior, had 87 tackles, 16 pass break-ups and seven interceptions...returned four punts for touchdowns as a junior...also established state of South Carolina record for the longest interception return for a touchdown (108 yards vs. Irmo).

CHOSE CLEMSON OVER: Auburn, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wake Forest.

STRENGTH: Speed. Has game-changing speed. Athletic and able to close quickly on the ball once it's in the air. Also has the ability and speed to recover when beaten on the deep ball. Dangerous on special teams, fearless returning the football and could be an answer in that area.

HE SAID IT: "I was ready to get the recruiting process over with for a couple of reasons," Gaither said. "Mainly, I just wanted to do it for my grandma. She really wanted me to stay close to home, and we always felt comfortable with Coach Scott. What's not to like about him? He just makes you feel comfortable with everything."

WHY CLEMSON? "My grandmother really liked Clemson and so did I," he said. "I didn't want to wait any longer. This will also give the other teams that were recruiting me time to look elsewhere. Time was winding down, so I called Coach Scott and Coach Bowden and told them I want to come to Clemson. They were both surprised and very happy. I was one of the top players they were after, so I made their recruiting a little better."
