Colvin, Tigers Wax Wake

CLEMSON – The Clemson baseball team left nothing to chance Thursday night. Rather than waiting for a North Carolina loss, the Tigers clinched a share of the ACC regular season title by laying a beat down of biblical proportions on Wake Forest.

Clemson scored in every inning except the second on its way to handing the Demon Deacons their worst defeat in school history with a 26-1 waxing at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Tigers (41-13, 22-6 ACC) are now tied with Georgia for the nation's longest winning streak at 13 games. It's also the first time since 1995 they've had any part of the regular season title.

"It means a lot, especially how we started out with getting swept at Virginia," Tigers coach Jack Leggett said. "We've kept our poise."

The numbers the Clemson offense put up are simply ridiculous.

The 26 runs by the Tigers are the most since they set the school and conference record by scoring 41 runs against N.C. State in April of 1979.

Clemson also pounded out 25 hits. Everybody on the team had at least one hit except D.J. Mitchell and Adrian Casanova.

Of those hits, seven were home runs, which is one shy of the school record set in 1962 when the Tigers hit eight against South Carolina.

The 11 earned runs given up by starting pitcher Brad Kledzik (5-4) were the most given up by a Demon Deacons starter since 1997.

Leading the hit parade was left fielder Tyler Colvin, who went 5-for-7 with eight RBIs and two home runs. He was a triple away from the cycle and just two RBI's short of the school record.

The last two times Colvin came to the plate, he had an opportunity to help the team tie the home run record, while setting the school record for RBIs in a game and also hitting for the cycle.

"That's exciting to see," Colvin said of the offensive outburst. "Everybody was getting on my butt to hit a triple."

First baseman Andy D'Alessio also hit two home runs, his 19th and 20th of the year, and had three RBIs, to give him 71 on the year and leave him 20 shy of Khalil Greene's school record.

Doug Hogan and Alex Burg each hit their first-career homer, while Ben Hall added his second of the season. Hogan also finished with four RBIs.

"We're seeing the ball pretty good," Leggett said. "We've got a pretty good rhythm going. But tomorrow's going to be a different game. This is just one game."

Overshadowed was the pitching performance of Clemson starter Stephen Faris (8-2), who pitched six scoreless innings, while allowing just two hits.

"We just happen to be on all cylinders tonight," Leggett said. "(Wake Forest) is a whole lot better than that."

If the Tigers win Friday or North Carolina loses, they will secure the No. 1 seed in next week's ACC Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla.

Colvin is ready for that to happen.

"I'm not worried about the tie," he said. "Let's get one more and put this away."
