Tigers End Regular Season on Fire

CLEMSON – The Clemson baseball team's regular season came to an end exactly as many predicted it would – with the Tigers being one of the top teams in the nation.

Box Score

The regular season concluded with a 7-3 victory over Wake Forest Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, which saw two rain delays that totaled two hours and 41 minutes.

Clemson outscored the Demon Deacons (33-20, 16-13 ACC) in the three-game sweep 39-4. It's the first time Wake Forest has been swept this season.

The No. 4 Tigers (43-13, 24-6 ACC) now enter Wednesday's ACC Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., with a 15-game winning streak, the longest since 1996, and a 13-game winning streak in the ACC, which ties another mark set in 1994.

"It's about pride," said left fielder Tyler Colvin, who has reached base safely in his last nine plate appearances and produced 14 RBIs in the three games. "You just go out there and win every game you can."

There was one downside to Clemson's sweep and it came in the fourth inning when right fielder Travis Storrer severely twisted his left ankle while batting. He was carried off the field and helped back to the locker room, where x-rays produced negative results.

Following the game, Storrer was in a boot cast and on crutches. It's unknown whether he'll be able to play in the ACC Tournament.

"I rolled my ankle coming out (of the batter's box) and it folded underneath me," Storrer said. "Hopefully I'll get better by Wednesday."

While you never want to see a key member of the team go down with an injury heading into the postseason, it could have been a lot worse.

"Right away, I thought it broke across the arch," he said. "My foot immediately turned cold and I knew that couldn't be good.

"It'd be nice to play (next week), but D.J. Mitchell is an excellent filler out there. Getting ready for the regional is the most important thing."

Even with Storrer's injury, Clemson coach Jack Leggett fully expects his team to be in contention for the tournament championship.

"You certainly don't want anybody to go down, especially somebody that means so much to us and who's been playing so well," Leggett said. "We're playing well right now. It's one of those things we envisioned happening if we got everyone playing well at the same time."

The Tigers will face either Wake Forest in the opening round should N.C. State beat Florida State Saturday.
