Despite falling 28-21 to Independence last weekend, Byrnes linebacker and Clemson verbal commitment Stanley Hunter believes Saturday's setback will help the younger members of Byrnes prepare for another championship run.

"We came out fired up," he said. "The offense and defense we just made some mental mistakes tonight. Our offense wasn't catching the ball really. I think we were a little too hyped up I think. We have a young team this year.

"We are just trying to get those guys ready for the season. The main focus tonight was to get the young guys ready. I think the hype had a lot to do with the young guys and it kind of froze them up a little bit. As a team I think we will be alright. We just need to execute on the little things."

With Byrnes jumping out to a 21-0 lead, Hunter said he was pleased with how the first team played.

"We came out fired up and played well," he said. "Then we started putting all of our younger guys in the game. This game was for them."

The Clemson coaching staff has been in frequent contact with Hunter since he announced his verbal commitment.

"I actually talk with them a lot," Hunter said. "Everything is going good. I am looking forward to going down there for a visit soon. I will be at a lot of the games, a whole lot. Me and Will and probably a couple of other people will go to the games."

Hunter also said he has big goals for the upcoming season.

"I'm looking forward to a national championship," said Hunter. "We have a lot to work on but we will be fine. There is nothing we can't do. Our coaches are great. They are the greatest coaching staff in America I believe.

"I am really looking forward to the Glades game. Actually I am really looking forward to all of the games since I am a senior. But I am going to take advantage of everything we have going on here at Byrnes. I feel good about everything we have going here." Top Stories
