Bowden: Spiller and Jacoby Ford ... we worked on some return stuff right at the beginning of the scrimmage. I thought both of those guys were handling the ball well and returned punts good. Michael Hamlin and Roy Walker had interceptions. One of them Chansi Stuckey threw. That wasn't the quarterback on that one. Of course he says he was a quarterback. Says he was anyway. Of course he's not after that pass. Palmer continues to play pretty good. Chansi Stuckey had a big play ... touchdown catch. Demerick Chancellor had a about a 70 yard run. Durrell Barry had about a 50-yard touchdown. Jacoby Ford yards after catch was really impressive today. He made some really really good runs.
Sounds like your offense was operating fairly effectively today ... completing a high number of passes.
Bowden: Well yeah but but a lot of what we do is a horizontal game as opposed to vertical. You need to have a pretty high percentage when you work horizontally. We had some downfield throws, but again when you go horizontally as much as we do you'd like for it to be pretty good. We had some fumbles today. We also jumped offsides six times on offense which is really unacceptable. We've got a senior team and we jumped offsides three or four times on defense and six times on offense.
Two weeks away from the first game it sounds like you still feel like you are a long ways off...
Bowden: Yeah we really do. Was really disappointed with the penalties offensively and defensively today. Lining up offsides and staying onside is what you work on from day one. When you can't do that two weeks before the first game it doesn't send a very good signal that your team is very attentive.
Sounds like Michael Palmer will play for you this year as opposed to redshirting?
Bowden: I don't know. We'll have to see but he's done really well.
What has he done that you weren't expecting?
Bowden: He just wasn't on the radar. he wasn't here in the spring so he wasn't on the radar. Caught the ball. Toughness and he's caught the ball well.
Did you talk with Tramaine Billie last night?
Bowden: Yes I did. He's got plenty of time. The biggest thing is for him to go to school on Wednesday. He's got plenty of time.
At this stage of the preseason do you get the sense your offense and defense are pretty much on a level playing field?
Bowden: Today, it was level. But the biggest disappointment today was penalties. But again, we are taking Gaines Adams out a lot and Anthony Waters out a lot. You are going to lose a lot of consistency. But that's where you'd like to see if other people are qualified to get in there.
