WR Markish Jones Profile
Hixon Field was home to one of the most anticipated high school football games in South Carolina history this past Saturday when Byrnes High School, ranked No. 2 in the country by USA Today hosted No. 5 Glades Central.
And not surprisingly, some of the top prospects in the state showed up to watch the game in person.
One of those prospects was Broome's Markish Jones.
"It is a great turnout here today," Jones told CUTigers.com from the sidelines. "It is nice with all the fans they have and all the festivities they have before the game."
Jones also talked with CUTigers.com about his big performance against York the day before.
After missing a day of school earlier in the week because of illness, he was supposed to sit out the entire first quarter, but that quickly changed with the Cougars scored two early touchdowns.
"I was supposed to sit out the first quarter because I missed a day of school this week because I was sick," he said. "But then we got down a little bit and coach told me he didn't have any choice so he put me in there."
It didn't take long for Jones to have an impact as he intercepted a pass in the second quarter.
"We were in the cover three zone," he said of the play. "I saw that the safety has slid over so I had to cover his ground. When I went over there he threw the ball and I made a good break on it."
The upstate standout also caught a long pass right before the half to give Broome the lead going into the half.
"We only practiced that play like two times the whole week," he said. "The coach told me to fake like I was going to block and then run the post."
Markish then made one more big play to seal the victory for Broome, who was leading York 32-25 late in the fourth quarter.
"We had two personal fouls so they got the ball down to the 11-yard line," he said. "There was like a minute left and they were going into score. They threw a curl route. I saw when they released it and I just broke on it as fast as I could. I intercepted it on like the three yard line."
On the recruiting front, another ACC power just offered Jones.
"Recruiting is going good right now," he said. "I just picked up an offer from Virginia Tech."
A verbal commitment is likely still a few months off for Jones as he concentrates on his senior season.
"Yeah I am going to take a couple of visits before I announce," he added.
NOTE: Stay tuned to CUTigers.com Monday afternoon as we bring you video of Markish's performance against York.
