DE Cliff Matthews Profile

The 4-star defensive end traveled to Clemson with several teammates on Saturday to watch the Tigers whip the Tar Heels.

"I had a real good time. I went up with two of my teammates, Jaron Brown and Jarred Bean. Jaron is a receiver and safety," Matthews told CUTigers.com.

Several current Clemson commitments spent Saturday trying to convince Cliff to join them in Tigertown.

"Yeah I hung out with Scotty Cooper," he said. "I also talked with Willy Korn. I also met Willy's teammates Xavier and Stanley."

Coach Bowden also took time out to speak with the prize recruit.

"I talked with coach Bowden. He was just telling me to keep doing what I am doing and to stay humble. He told me to have a good year," Matthews said. "I also met with coach Swinney. I also talked with coach Scott and coach Rumph."

The talented defender said he was not surprised at the outcome Saturday.

"I knew Clemson would beat them by a lot," stated Matthews.

The prize recruit is having a great season for the state's top 2A program.

"We are 5-0 and No. 1 in 2A," he said. "So far I have 53 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 13 sacks and four batted balls. I also have two receptions for 115 yards."

The star defensive end has now visited all three of his favorites this fall. How did the game day experience at Clemson compare with the others?

"Clemson and Georgia both have a great atmosphere. They are both very loud. That is what stood out to me the most," replied Matthews.

All three favorites (Clemson, UGA, SC) will get official visits later this year before Matthews makes his final decision.

"I have an official visit scheduled to Georgia for October 7 when they play Tennessee. I am not sure of the dates for Clemson and South Carolina yet," he added.
