Q & A with PK Jad Dean

We had the chance to catch up with Clemson verbal commitment Jad Dean late Friday afternoon. With the leg strength to be able to nail a 70-yard field goal in practice, the Tigers' have landed one of the top kickers in the southeast for the 2003 recruiting class.

Jad Dean connected on 4-of-5 field goals and 46-of-48 extra points last season for Greenwood High School. For his career, he is 14-of-19 on field goal attempts with his longest conversion coming from 48-yards out. Dean was offered scholarships from LSU and Clemson before deciding on his school of choice two weeks ago. Here is the latest on Dean in our latest Q & A session.

What made you decide to commit to Clemson so early?
Ever since I was a little kid I was raised to love Clemson and hate Carolina. It has always been my dream to one day touch the rock, run down the hill, and play football for the Clemson Tigers and when that opportunity came, I jumped on it.

I've heard that Georgia was disappointed that you didn't go there...any comments on that situation?
Yeah, well actually the day I committed to Clemson I was about to commit to UGA that morning. I had called and asked to speak with coach Richt, so they connected me to his cell phone and I got his voice mail, but didn't leave a message. Then that night my coach called and told me he had talked with Coach Bowden and that Clemson wanted to offer me a scholarship and to call Coach Bowden, so I did and told him I would be up there the next day to commit.

What is the longest field goal you've nailed during practice?
I have hit from 70 in practice.

During a game?
48 in a game.

Do you anticipate playing any other position on the field this year?
Nah, I am just going to kick and punt.

What do you feel has been your most impressive accomplishment on the field during your high school career?
I would have to say helping my team win the state championship my freshman and sophomore years. Sure individual honors are great and all, but I would trade them all for a ring.

Any other teams still trying to change your mind?
Yeah UGA and LSU are still recruiting me hard if not harder, but I am very firm with Clemson and I will be signing with Clemson in February.

We'd like to conclude by thanking Jad for taking the time to speak with us. You can catch more on one of the top kickers in the country on August 18th, when he'll be a special guest on the College Football Weekend Preview Show with Roy Philpott and Scott Rhymer on 104.9 WCCPFM in upstate South Carolina.
