Clemson - Duke Game Notes

Duke has beaten Clemson 19 consecutive games, including eight straight at Littlejohn Coliseum. It is the longest winning streak in the series at any time for the Blue Devils.

Clemson vs. Duke Series
•Duke has beaten Clemson 19 consecutive games, including eight straight at Littlejohn Coliseum. It is the longest winning streak in the series at any time for the Blue Devils. Clemson's last win over Duke took place during the 1996-97 season, an 86-82 overtime victory in Littlejohn Coliseum behind a late steal and dunk by Greg Buckner, now with the Dallas Mavericks.

•Duke's 19-game winning streak over Clemson is the second longest in history against the Tigers by an ACC team. North Carolina beat Clemson 25 consecutive games between 1953-63.

•Duke has an 19-game winning streak over Clemson, but it should be noted that Duke has been ranked in the top 10 entering all 19 games. In fact, Thursday night's game is the 21st consecutive game Clemson has played against a top 10 Duke team. Six of the 19 games Duke has entered the game ranked number-one in the nation, including last year's 10-point Duke win at Clemson.

•Duke's 19-game winning streak in the series has been by an average margin of 16.4 points per game.

•Duke is one of just two ACC teams with a winning record over Clemson in Littlejohn Coliseum. Duke holds a 21-16 lead in the previous 37 meetings in the facility. North Carolina is the only other ACC team with a winning record in Littlejohn. Duke and Clemson will meet at Clemson on February 22.

•Clemson lost three times to Duke in 1997-98, but the three games were decided by seven total points. That included an 81-80 loss at Cameron Indoor Stadium when Clemson overcame a 24-point deficit in the second half and had two shots to win the game inside the last five seconds. That is the closest Clemson has come to defeating Duke since the 1994-95 season. That was the year Clemson registered its last win at Duke, a 75-70 victory in Rick Barnes first ACC game as Clemson coach.

•Clemson has played two triple overtime games in its history and one of those contests was against Duke. During the 1981-82 season Duke downed Clemson at Durham by a 73-72 score in triple overtime. Clemson guard Vincent Hamilton played all 55 minutes for the Tigers. That was the 100th career win for Coach K.

•Clemson has defeated Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski nine times, including seven games in Littlejohn Coliseum. (Clemson has defeated Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium twice since Coach K has been the coach of the Blue Devils.) He is 43-9 against Clemson. He has defeated Clemson more than any other school.

•Duke was ranked in the top 20 in the nation six of the wins Clemson has registered against the Blue Devils since Krzyzewski has been in Durham. That includes consecutive wins at Littlejohn in 1988, 1989 and 1990 when Dale Davis led the Tigers to victory over three top 10 Duke teams. Davis, then a freshman, had 23 points and 17 rebounds in the 1988 victory over a #9 Duke team.

•Clemson was the only ACC team to defeat Krzyzewski in 1994-95. A back ailment forced him to the sidelines for the rest of the season after Clemson's 75-70 victory in early January of that season.

•The first meeting between Duke and Clemson took place in Durham during the 1925- 26 season. Duke came away with a 46-12 victory. Clemson's first win in the series took place in 1938-39, by a 38-36 score at Clemson. Banks McFadden, Clemson's first ever basketball All-American, led Clemson to that victory in overtime.

•Duke has a 52-4 lead in the series in games played in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The first game in the series at Cameron was a 54-49 Blue Devin win on January 20, 1940. That was just the third game in the history of Cameron Indoor Stadium, the first for Duke against a future ACC foe. Duke opened Cameron with a win over Princeton on Jan. 6, 1940 and later defeated The Citadel before meeting Clemson.

•The two teams split a pair of 87-82 overtime decisions in 1979-80. Clemson won the game at Clemson when Duke was #1 in the nation entering the game. It is still one of just two games in history Clemson has beaten a #1 ranked team. Bobby Conrad, now a federal judge in North Carolina, made 8-8 free throws down the stretch to help Clemson to the victory. Later that year, on the night Duke retired Mike Gminski's jersey, Duke returned the favor with an 87-82 victory in overtime (yes the same score and extra session) in Cameron over Clemson. Gminski had 29 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocked shots in that game to lead the Blue Devils.

Clemson in Durham
Clemson has a 4-55 record in Durham, including a 4-52 mark at Cameron Indoor Stadium and has not won in Cameron Indoor Stadium since the 1994-95 season when Rick Barnes beat Mike Krzyzewski in his first ACC game as Clemson coach. Clemson has lost nine in a row in Durham. Clemson lost its first 28 games in Durham until the Tigers won in 1975-76, Bill Foster's first year as Clemson head coach.

Clemson's only other victory at Cameron since the 1977-78 season took place in 1983-84 in Bill Foster's last ACC game as Clemson coach, a 77-76 Tiger victory over a 15th ranked Duke team. Clemson had a 76-61 lead with five minutes left, but Duke mounted a comeback. Sophomore guard Johnny Dawkins, now associated head coach with the Blue Devils, missed a right corner jumper at the buzzer, a shot that would have been a game winner.

Clemson has won just twice at Duke in the last 29 years, but all three current Duke assistants played in a loss at Cameron to Clemson. Dawkins was a member of the 1984 Duke team that lost to Clemson and Steve Wojciechowski and Chris Collins played for the Blue Devils in Clemson's victory in 1995.

Each of Clemson's last two wins at Duke featured an outstanding performance by a Clemson freshman. In 1984, Horace Grant had a perfect shooting game as he made 6-6 from the field and 4-4 from the foul line in scoring 16 points. He had four offensive rebounds and three steals in just 24 minutes. Eleven years later, Clemson got 11 points and six rebounds from freshman Greg Buckner in Clemson's shocking victory. Both Grant and Buckner went on to stellar NBA careers. Buckner is still playing with the Dallas Mavericks.
