QB Jon Richt Profile
Q&A with Jon Richt
The Clemson coaching staff picked up a verbal commitment for the class of 2008 from the unlikeliest source Thursday evening- the family of Georgia head coach Mark Richt.
Jon Richt (6-2, 205), quarterback for Prince Avenue Christian School in Bogart, Ga. and son of Mark, told the Clemson coaching staff Thursday night he intends to play his college football at Clemson University.
"I'm committed to Clemson," Richt said. "I just felt real comfortable with the coaches there, especially Brad Scott."
Prince Avenue Christian School head coach Richard Ricketts also confirmed the news to CUTigers.com Friday afternoon.
"He just felt real comfortable with Clemson," said Ricketts. "And when things started to pick up (with the recruiting process), he decided pretty quick that he already knew where he wanted to go."
Of course, with Richt being the son of the head coach at Georgia, that begs the question, 'will he stick with his verbal commitment to Clemson or eventually end up at Georgia?'
According to both Ricketts and Richt, it's Clemson all the way.
"People always when he said he was real young that he would end up playing at Georgia," he said. "But he's always has been real adamant that he did not want to do that. It would be a tough situation for both him and his dad, so that's one of the reasons he went ahead with Clemson."
Richt said, "Throuhgout the last couple of weeks an dmonths that I've been offered I realized that Clemson was one of the best places for me to go and it's not too far."
Richt also said that his dad played a major role in the decision.
"He's my dad, he had a big big part of it," he said. "He went through with me what the basics of the decision are and how everything works in the recruiting process and we reached the decision."
As a junior, Richt threw for over 1,600 yards.
Ricketts also said that Richt is more of a drop-back passer than anything else.
"He's more of a pocket passer quarterback," he said. "But the one thing about him is that he's extremely tough. He threw for about 1,600 yards last year but what people don't understand is that we are a very young program. I guess that makes me doubly more proud. His talent has showed up."
Richt is one of two quarterbacks expected to be signed in the 2008 class. The Tigers are also in good shape with Jacksonville, Fla. native QB Kyle Parker.
According to published reports, Richt impressed Clemson's coaching staff last year during a summer football camp.
Richt's main recruiter to Clemson is offensive line coach Brad Scott, who is also close with Mark Richt.
"We are real happy for him," said Ricketts. "I think he always felt really good about Clemson's staff and that was a big deal for him."
Jon chose the Tigers over interest from Maryland, Georgia, Colarado, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.
Clemson and Georgia last played each other in football in 2003, but the two schools have scheduled a home and home series in 2013 (at Clemson) and 2014 (at Georgia).
Even if Richt were to redshirt his freshman year, he will have used up his eligibility by 2012.
In a statement released by Mark Richt, the Georgia head coach said he was excited for his son.
"It was an exciting day for us as a family on Thursday," he said. "Jon called the
coaches from Clemson and told them he wanted to be a Tiger. They seemed
genuinely excited about accepting his commitment. Katharyn and I are very
happy for him, and very proud of him."
The Tigers now have four verbal commitments for the 2008 class, including WR Marquan Jones, DL Daquan Bowers and LS/TE Matt Skinner.
