ACC Game Previews

After starting 0-4 in non-conference play a year ago, Louisiana Tech opened the 2002 season with an impressive 39-36 win over Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs and Tigers will face off Saturday afternoon at Death Valley, in a rematch of last year's Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho.

Navy-Marine Corp Stadium (30,000)

THE GAME: The 20th-ranked Wolfpack will be shooting for their third-straight win to open the season when they take on the Midshipmen for the first time in 81 years ... Navy leads the rivalry 6-2, outscoring State in process 231-to-48 ... the Midshipmen posted a 40-0 win the series' last meeting in 1921 ... the last time the two teams played one another in Annapolis was in 1916.

THE COACHES: Paul Johnson is 1-0 in his first year at Navy and 63-10 in six seasons overall ... Chuck Amato is 17-9 in his third season at NC State, including a 9-1 mark against non-conference opponents.

NAVY: Navy ended a 10-game losing streak with a 38-7 season-opening win over SMU ... ... quarterback Craig Candeto ran for a team-high 153 yards and three scores and completed four-of-nine passes for 106 yards as the Middies piled up 293 yards on the ground ... Navy's defense forced five turnovers and held the Mustangs scoreless over the final 51-plus minutes ... sophomore LB Bobby McClarin forced two fumbles and sophomore safety Josh Smith had a team-high 12 tackles.

N.C. STATE: The Wolfpack ran its record to 2-0 with a 34-0 win over East Tennessee State ... DB Marcus Hudson (1 intereption & 1 fumble recovery) keyed a defensive effort that limited the Bucs to one pass completion in 12 attempts, had 18 tackles for losses and held ETSU to 81 total yards ... junior QB Philip Rivers has thrown at least one TD pass in 21 of his 26 career starts and is 17th on the ACC's career passing list (6,061) and 22nd in career total offense (5,988) ... on the year, Rivers has completed 69 percent of his passes for 421 yards and three TDs ... Rivers also leads the Wolfpack in rushing touchdowns (3) ... WR Bryan Peterson ranks 10th among Wolfpack career reception leaders (103) and 10th in receiving yardage (1,442) and has caught a pass in 27 straight games ... true freshman T.A. McLendon leads NCS in rushing with 124 yards on 29 carries (4.3 ypc) ... sophomore Greg Golden has 101 yards rushing and is averaging 4.8 yard per attempt ... State has scored 34 points in each of its first two games ... the Wolfpack is 2-0 for the third time in as many seasons under Amato.

THE GAME: Georgia Tech, fresh off its 45-3 win over Vanderbilt, looks for win No. 2 of the season when it travels to venerable Memorial Stadium to take a Connecticut team coming off a 24-16 season-opening loss to Boston College ... this is the first meeting between the two teams in football ... the two schools have met four times in basketball with Tech holding a 3-1 edge.

THE COACHES: Randy Edsall, a former defensive coordinator at Tech in 1998, is 9-25 in his fourth season at UConn ... Chan Gailey is 1-0 in his first season with the Yellow Jackets and 25-11 in four seasons as a head coach on the college level.

CONNECTICUT: The Huskies are 5-18 in their third year of Division I-A competition ... Georgia Tech is one of six first-time opponents on the Connecticut schedule and only the second ACC opponent with the Huskies dropping a 48-21 decision to North Carolina in 1990 ... 2002 marks UConn's 50th and final season at Memorial Stadium ... the Huskies are 128-99-4 (.563) in the 16,200 seat facility ... UConn will move into brand new 40,000 seat Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season ... 6-5, 226-pound quarterback Dan Orlovsky completed 24 of 37 passes for 203 yards against Boston College.

GEORGIA TECH: A.J. Suggs threw three TD passes and Tony Hollings ran for a game-high 153 yards and two TDs as Tech opened the season with a 45-3 win over Vanderbilt ... Hollings, a converted safety, became the first running back in school history to run for more than 100 yards in his first game ... PK Luke Manget made all six of his extra point attempts against Vanderbilt and extended his ACC-record consecutive PAT streak to 137 in a row ... Manget is 15th on the ACC's career scoring list with 266 points ... Kelley Rhino, who set the ACC single season punt return record a year ago with 515 yards, returned five punts against Vanderbilt for 110 yards and moved from 17th to 10th on the ACC's career punt return list with 798 yards ... the 42-point win over the Commodores was the most lopsided season-opening win since a 51-7 win over Furman in 1995 ... Tech's 31 points in the second quarter were its highest single-quarter total since a 32-point fourth quarter outburst against UT-Chattanooga in 1985.

THE GAME: In a rematch of last season's Humanitarian Bowl, Clemson's Tigers will host defeanding WAC Champion Louisiana Tech in the Tigers' home opener ... this will be just the second meeting between the two schools ... the Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 49-24 in last year's bowl clash in Boise, Idaho.

LAST YEAR: RB Bernard Rambert had 178 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns in a 49-24 win in the 2001 Humanitarian Bowl ... four freshmen (Roscoe Crosby, Airese Currie, Ben Hall and Derrick Hamilton) scored a touchdown in the game.

THE COACHES: Jack Bicknell is 19-17 in four years at Tech ... Tommy Bowden is 22-15 in four years at Clemson and 40-19 in six seasons overall, including a 2-0 mark against the Bulldogs.

LOUISIANA TECH: After being 0-4 in non- conference play a year ago, Louisiana Tech opened the 2002 season with a 39-36 win over Oklahoma State ... junior QB Luke McCown completed 38 of 66 passes for 448 yards and three TDs against the Cowboys as the Bulldogs overcame a 36-18 deficit in the third quarter ... Saturday's game will mark the second time that a coach named Bicknell has brought a team to Death Valley ... Jack Bicknell's father Jack Bicknell, Sr., brought Boston College to Clemson in 1982, earning a 17-17 tie with the defending national champions.

CLEMSON: The Tigers opened the season with a 31-28 loss at eighth-ranked Georgia in the first meeting between the two teams since 1995 ... Khaleed Vaughn had six tackles, including a quarterback sack and a pass broken up to lead a defense that allowed the Bulldogs just 203 yards of total offense ... making his first career start, junior quarterback Willie Simmons completed 17of 37 for 165 yards and one TD ... eight different players caught at least one pass ... wide receiver Kevin Youngblood had a career-high six receptions for 66 yards and one score ... the Tigers are now 79-20-8 in 107 season openers ... Georgia was the first of eight opponents on Clemson's 2002 schedule that played in bowl game a year ago.

THE GAME: Maryland's Terrapins open their 2002 home schedule when they host Mid-American Conference foe Akron under the lights of Byrd Stadium ... Saturday's game marks the first meeting between the two schools ... the Terps are 4-2 against teams currently in the MAC.

THE COACHES: Ralph Friedgen is 10-3 in his second season at Maryland ... Lee Owens is 29-49 in his eighth season at Akron.

AKRON: The Zips opened the 2002 season with a 57-21 loss at Iowa Saturday ... despite missing all but five games a year ago with a knee injury, senior Brandon Payne (the MAC's active leading rusher) is sixth on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,437 yards ... QB Charlie Frye threw for 230 yards in the season opener ... Frye set school records in completions and completion percentage last year and is 13th among career total offense leaders (2,639) and ninth in passing yardage (2,283).

MARYLAND: Maryland opened the season with a 22-0 loss to Notre Dame in the Kickoff Classic ... junior Scott McBrien, a transfer from West Virginia, started at quarterback against the Irish, completing nine-of-23 passes for 84 yards ... LB E.J. Henderson had a team-high 16 tackles, including 11 solos against Notre Dame ... freshman D'Qwell Jackson played 39 snaps against the Fighthing Irish and finished with 12 tackles, including 10 solo efforts ... TB Bruce Perry, the 2001 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, will miss the first 4-8 weeks of the season with an injury to his left groin muscle ... Perry was the first Terp since Charlie Wysocki in 1980 to lead the ACC in rushing (112.9); was ninth nationally in all-purpose yardage (156.2) and his 1,242 yards rushing is the fourth-best single season mark in school history ... Akron is the first of four-straight home games for the Terps - Akron, Florida State, Eastern Michigan & Wofford - for the Terps.

East Carolina (0-1, 0-0 C-USA) at Wake Forest (0-1, 0-0) 6:30 PM

THE GAME: Wake Forest and East Carolina renew acquaintences for the fifth time in a series that is deadlocked at two games apiece ... this game marks the first back-to-back meeting between the Deacons and Pirates in series history ... each of the last three meetings have been decided by three points or less.

LAST YEAR: RB Tarence Williams ran for 158 yards and one TD and Tyler Ashe kicked two field goals as the Deacs beat the homestanding Pirates 21-19 in their first game under Jim Grobe.

THE COACHES: Steve Logan, ECU's all-time winningest coach, is 65-51 in his 11th season at the helm of the Pirate program ... Jim Grobe is 6-6 in his second season at Wake Forest and 33-34-1 in seven years overall.

EAST CAROLINA: The Pirates lost their 2002 season opener 23-16 to Duke ... PK Kevin Miller has made 12 straight field goals inside of 40 yards ... Miller is third on the Conference USA career scoring chart with 206 points ... WR Richard Alston has caught at least one pass in 13 straight games ... ECU is playing its longest regular season schedule ever (12 games over 15 weeks) ... under Logan, the Pirates are 47-7 in games in which they score 28 points or more.

WAKE FOREST: Last Thursday's 42-41 overtime loss to Northern Illinois marked the team's eighth-straight game decided by seven points or less over the past two seasons ... the loss also marked the fifth-straight game that both the Deacs and their opponent have scored at least 30 points ... WR Fabian Davis totaled 215 all-purpose yards against the Huskies, including a 82-yard punt return for touchdown ... senior FB Ovie Mughelli ran for a career-high 74 yards on 11 carries and tied a school-record with four rushing TDs; Mughelli entered the game with 208 yards and one TD in his previous three seasons ... FS Quintin Williams had nine tackles and came up with two interceptions against NIU, the fifth and sixth of his career ... two true freshmen played in the season opener - Chris Barclay and Chris Davis; Barclay ran for 37 yards on five carries while Davis totaled 39 yards on three kickoff returns ... WR Jason Anderson has caught a pass in 11 straight games ... senior QB James McPherson is 10th on the school's all-time passing list with 2,986 yards ... senior tailback Tarence Williams became just the eighth player in school history to record 1,000 rushing yards in a season when he totaled 1,018 yards in 10 games a year ago.

THE GAME: Duke's Blue Devils will be gunning for win No. 2 of the young season when they host a Louisville team coming off a 22-17 loss to Kentucky ... this is the first meeting between the two schools ... Duke is 14-15-1 against teams currently in Conference USA.

THE COACHES: John L. Smith is 34-16 in his fifth season at Louisville and 103-55 in 14 campaigns overall ... Carl Franks is 4-30 in three years at Duke.

LOUISVILLE: Two-time Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year, senior QB Dave Ragone is 20-6 as a starter ... Ragone is eighth on the Conference USA career total offense list (6,169), ninth in passing (5,877) and tied for fifth in touchdown responsibility (60) ... Ragone completed 14 passes to eight different receivers in the loss to Kentucky ... Broderick Clark had a 100-yard return of a kickoff for a score against the Wildcats ... junior defensive end DeWayne White has 28 career quarterback sacks ... DUKE: The Blue Devils snapped their 23-game losing streak with a 23-16 win over East Carolina Saturday ... Duke limited the visiting Pirates to 25 net yards rushing and 155 total yards while forcing four turnovers ... 250-pound tailback Alex Wade ran 24 times for a career-high 109 yards , including 46 on nine carries in Duke's final fourth-quarter scoring drive ... freshman LB Brendan Dewan recorded a team-high nine tackles, recovered his first career fumble in the opening quarter and then returned his first career interception 28 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter ... five true freshman played against ECU ... Brent Garber kicked three field goals in the win, including a 56-yarder in the second quarter ... safety Alex Green has intercepted a pass in two straight games ... Adam Smith started at quarterback completing five-of-11 passes for 52 yards ... Chris Dapolito, a transfer from Rutgers, made his collegiate debut and completed five-of-nine for 34 yards and added 27 yards and one TD on 10 rushing attempts.

THE GAME: The Cavaliers return home to the friendly confines of Scott Stadium to take on South Carolina in a nationally-televised affair on ESPN ... the two schools are playing one another for the first time since 1987 ... the Gamecocks have won seven of the last nine meetings and lead the series 19-12-1 ... the Cavaliers won the most recent contest in Charlottesville 30-20 in 1986 ... the series' totals reflect South Carolina's forfeit of a 17-7 win in 1965 for using an ineligible player.

Lou Holtz is 18-18 in four years at South Carolina and 234-113-7 in 31 seasons overall, including a 4-2 mark against UVa ... Al Groh is 5-9 in his second year at Virginia and 31-49 in seven seasons overall.

SOUTH CAROLINA: With the Gamecocks 34-24 win over New Mexico State, Holtz moved into a tie with Michigan's Bo Schembechler for ninth in all-time victories ... South Carolina has been ranked a school-record 20 straight national rankings ... in their 109th season of intercollegiate football, the Gamecocks are 486-488-14 ... USC has won 18 of its last 25 games ... Holtz is the only coach in college football history to lead six schools (William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame & South Carolina) to a post-season bowl game ... in his first career start against New Mexico State QB Corey Jenkins completed nine-of-18 passes for 166 yards and ran 20 times for a team-high 113 yards.

VIRGINIA: Senior WR Billy McMullen had five catches for 101 yards against Florida State and moved into 23rd on the ACC career receptions list (149) and 26th in career receiving yardage (2,218) ... McMullen is 286 yards shy of becoming Virginia's all-time leader in receiving yardage ... UVa lists only 10 seniors on the roster, the second-fewest in the ACC ... freshman QB Marques Hagan made his first career start Saturday against Florida State ... true freshman Wali Lundy has led the team in rushing in each of the first two games, including a 94-yard effort in the season opener against Colorado State ... junior QB Matt Schaub completed 19 of 25 passes for 257 yards and three fourth-quarter touchdown passes against the Seminoles; has thrown for 200 yards or more in four of his last eight games.

THE GAME: North Carolina looks to bounce back from its season-opening loss to Miami (Ohio) when take on a Syracuse team that opened its season with a 42-21 loss at Brigham Young; the Cougars threw for 397 yards ... this is only the third meeting between the schools ... the two teams played a home-and-home series in 1995 and 1996 with both teams winning on the road.

THE COACHES: Paul Pasqualoni is 90-40-1 in 13 years at Syracuse and 124-57-1 in 18 seasons overall ... John Bunting is 8-6 in two years at UNC and 46-20-2 in six seasons overall.

SYRACUSE: Under Pasqualoni, the Orange-men are 74-12-1 when leading at the half ... junior R.J. Anderson is 10-3 as Syracuse's starting QB ... Anderson, who set a Big East record for lowest interception percentage (1.39) in 2001, had two passes picked off in the BYU game ... the Orangemen are 91-38-2 in the Carrier Dome since it first opened in 1980 ... Syracuse is 105-67-4 all-time in televised games ... freshman tailback Damien Rhodes led the Orangemen in rushing against Brigham Young with 82 yards and two TDs rushing on 14 carries.

NORTH CAROLINA: Senior wide receiver Sam Aiken had career-highs in receptions (8) and yards (174) against Miami (Ohio) ... over his last four games Aiken has totaled 27 catches for 489 yards and four TDs ... Sophomore quarterback Darian Durant threw for 279 yards against Miami of Ohio and tied his career highs in completions (24) and attempts (37) ... 16 players saw their first action as Tar Heels Saturday, including five true freshmen ... tight end Bobby Blizzard caught four passes for 29 yards and one TD ... backup QB C.J. Stephens completed four-of-nine passes for 76 yards and one TD in the game's final 1:39 ... DB Dexter Reid had a career-high 21 tackles (13 solo) and two pass broken up against the Redhawks.
