Top Clemson RB Target Talks Recruiting

Jamie Harper is one of the nation's most coveted running back prospects. Harper, from Jacksonville, Fla., has exploded on the recruiting scene over the past several weeks with such powers like Florida, Florida State, Clemson and Wisconsin that have offered him a scholarship.

Two months ago he was just another good prospect on a list. Two months ago Jamie Harper didn't have a scholarship offer. He was hoping things would turn out okay with his recruiting but was not sure what to expect in the future. Harper, 6-0 and 205 pounds, is from Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian Academy. He showed up at the Jacksonville combine in mid-March. There, Harper tore things up, running a 4.35 forty and was one of the top overall performers. Since that night in March things have changed for Mr. Harper. Clemson offered first and the rest is history.

"I think I have nine offers now, maybe 10," said Harper. "Florida, Florida State, Clemson, Central Florida, Minnesota, Illinois, South Carolina and Wisconsin have all offered so far. I went from zero (scholarship offers) to a dozen or so. It's exciting and it's humbling. I need to pray and choose wisely. I just want to come to an end with a good result."

Today Harper finished his junior year with his last final exam, although school is not official out until Friday.

"I am done with school and happy with that. Spring (ball) didn't go as planned but at least we saw what we need to improve on. This season I will be playing running back and linebacker."

Harper hopes to camp this summer at Clemson and Florida. He also hopes to visit Florida, FSU, Miami, UCF, SC, and he hopes to go up north to check out Illinois.

As for recruiting Harper claims he is open between Clemson, Florida, South Carolina, FSU, UCF, Illinois and Minnesota.

"Clemson's offense is pretty straight forward. They have a zone running game and hit the counter a lot. They want backs to hit the hole and break away. That's what colleges are looking for, that home run back. I like how they use backs and how much they run ball. With C.J. (Spiller) being there is tremendous. I played against him and I knew he would explode like that. That helps Clemson with me. If he can do it, I can do it.

"The all around talent level at Florida is unreal. They are coming off a national championship. Florida plays freshmen. My style fits their scheme too. Florida is so enticing because the talent going there is unbelievable.

"The thing about South Carolina I like is Steve Spurrier. He has tradition with the way he coaches. Coach Spurrier has been everywhere and he knows the game.

"FSU is a team that is up and coming up with that new staff. They will show that this year. They need impact at running back.

"UCF is close to home and their coaching staff is great. I talked with Coach (George) O'Leary on phone and he is a real cool guy and there is a good situation at running back.

I didn't know too much about until I spoke with them. They will run the spread and get it done and they need a big time back.

I love coach (Dan) Disch at Illinois. I love the way he talks. I can go in there as a freshman and compete and play. I can be their power back.

"I am really looking at the coach/player chemistry at each school. I am a man of my word and I am looking for the same in these coaches. Playing time will be important and so will academics. Academics are first and have been with me since kindergarten."

Last season as a junior Harper rushed for over 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also had 300 yards and five touchdowns receiving. Harper also has good size and if he doesn't blow by you he can run through you or make you miss. Harper runs with very good power, finishes runs very well and has a very good stiff arm. He shows excellent quickness, hips, feet and the ability to make a defender look silly in the open field. Harper has good vision, balance and instincts and can stop on a dime and show extraordinary change of direction and athleticism. He can also catch the ball out of the backfield.

The bottom line is that Jamie Harper does everything well. He can run with power and elusiveness. He can run between the tackles or out wide. He is also a big play threat each time he touches the football because he is such an explosive runner. Top Stories
