Thomas Talks About Defensive Improvement

Rodney Thomas and the rest of the defense wanted the last week's game to come down to their ability to stop the Yellow Jackets. "That's what we wanted. The game was going to come down to us- that's what we were saying the whole time on the sideline. We wanted to win it for the whole team," said Thomas.

Rodney Thomas Profile

Three games into the season, has this defense started to develop an indentity?
Thomas: Not necessarily an identity. We just go out everyday and take things one day at a time. We want to peak on game day and play hard and execute- that's the most important thing. We all have to play hard and execute week in and week out.

How good can this team be?
Thomas: Extremely good. The offense will come around and get into a sequence where they feel comfortable and the defense will get our gameplan so that we feel comfortable week to week. We just need to put it all together in one game, and when we do- look out.

Is there still room for improvement on defense?
Thomas: No doubt. This past week we had 7 or 8 missed tackles and some of those were key on their big score. Offensively, we had a couple of dropped passes and special teams we had a couple of gaps that they broke on some returns. There is always room for improvement.

How do you feel about the defense winning the game for you last weekend?
Thomas: That's exactly what we wanted. The game was going to come down to us- that's what we were saying the whole time on the sideline. We wanted to win it for the whole team.

Tell us what you know about Ball State.
Thomas: We don't too much about Ball State. We know they have a pretty good offensive line, similar to Louisiana Tech, and they have a real good running back. We aren't looking over them or anything like that, we respect them.

Are the polls something that this team looks at every week?
Thomas: Some people are like that, but for me personally I don't care about that kind of stuff. I just want to win and have fun, that's the most important thing.

Was it crucial to get a win in your first ACC game?
Thomas: Yeah- we won an ACC game, plus it was against Georgia Tech. We wanted to start out with a win and now that we are 1-0 in the conference with that first win we feel a whole lot better. Basically, we just wanted to go out and win the game last week and that's what we did.
