He already had the Clemson record for NCAA Tournament wins by a coach with a 50-28 NCAA Tournament record. Bill Wilhelm had 42 between 1958-93.
*Clemson has now won at least 39 games for 22 consecutive years, including
all 14 seasons of Jack Leggett's Clemson career.
*Brad Chalk knocked home the winning run with a single in the bottom of
the ninth to give Clemson a 3-2 win over St. John's in the NCAA Myrtle
Beach Regional on Friday. Chalk had two RBIs to account for two of the
three Tiger runs. He had recorded just 16 RBIs all season entering
today's contest. It was actually the second straight game Chalk has had
two RBIs, as he had two in Clemson's ACC Tournament win over Florida State
last week. So Chalk had just 14 RBIs in his first 39 games this year and
now has four in his last two. He had three hits today, his first three
hit game since April 13 against Wake Forest.
*Chalk's walk-off single was the fourth walk-off hit of the year for a
Clemson player. All four have been by different players. Addison
Johnson, Doug Hogan and Alex Lee have also had walk-off hits this year.
It marks the second walk-off hit in the last four games by a Clemson
player. Lee's bunt single on a suicide squeeze beat Miami (FL) in the
first game of the ACC Tournament on May 23. It was the first walk-off
game winning hit for Chalk as a Clemson player.
*You don't have to go back very far in the Clemson record books to find a
walk-off hit to win an NCAA Tournament game. Last year Tyler Colvin hit a
walk-off grand-slam at Clemson to defeat Oral Roberts in a Super Regional
game on June 9, 2006.
*Chalk's walk-off hit was the third in an NCAA Tournament game under Jack
Leggett. In addition to the one today and Colvin's grand-slam last year,
Jeff Baker had a walk-off double to beat Nebraska in the 2002 NCAA
*Alan Farina got the win in relief today, giving him a 6-3 record for the
year. Even though he has started just two games all year, Farina is now
tied for the team lead in wins with six, the same total as starter David
*Doug Hogan had a 2-4 day at the plate and now has an 11-game hitting
streak. Hogan's triple was a key to Clemson's two-run game-winning rally
in the ninth. It was just the third triple of the year for Clemson's
*Clemson did not commit and error today, its 20th errorless game of the
year. Clemson is close to establishing a school record for fielding
percentage with a .972 fielding rate.
*After winning 40 of 48 games, St. John's has now lost three consecutive
games, but all three have been by a total of four runs, including each of
the last two by one run.
*Clemson has won three of its four postseason games (ACC and NCAA
Tournament) and has done so without hitting a single home run.
*Clemson has allowed four runs or less in each of its last five games and
has given up a total of just 13 runs in five games. The pitching staff
has allowed just 10 earned runs in the last five games.
*Clemson is now 2-0 in the NCAA Tournament against St. John's and Jack
Leggett is now 2-0 against St. John's as a college coach. Clemson's
previous win over the Red Storm took place under Bill Wilhelm in 1988.
Wilhelm was a spectator in the stands at Friday's game. Leggett defeated
the Red Storm in the 1985 NCAA Tournament when he was the head coach at
*Clemson now has 21 come-from-behind wins in his 39 victories this season.
