JackSmack: Issue #50

Well Tiger fans, we seemed to be looking ahead to the Florida State game for a while Saturday, but we finally got it together to pull out the easy win. Willie threw for a good percentage and J.J. McKelvey caught almost 85% of his passing yards. We are now (3-1) and (1-0), and are the second team getting votes in the coaches poll.

We're off this week before our big Thursday night game in Tallahassee. I think we'll be 12-13 point dogs in this game, but we still have bring our ‘A' game because we have the talent to compete. FSU is a team that if they bring their ‘A' game, they can beat Miami, but if they don't come to play, they are very susceptible. So we'll see, the Tigers have a great chance in this one.

Nationally last week in college football, Florida routed Tennessee in Knoxville. Grossman played very well, but the 2nd quarter performance by the entire Vol team was pathetic. I was laughing at halftime it was so ridiculous. Congratulations to Ron Zook. The game of the day, though, was Notre Dame and Michigan State.

The best receiver in college football, Charles Rogers, made one of the best catches I have ever seen and it was on 4th and 11 when the ball was going nowhere else. Then Arnaz Battle breaks off a pass for a long run to win it for the (4-0) Irish as they broke a 5-game losing streak to the Spartans.

In other action, Michigan escaped at home (10-7) over Utah, and N.C. State got a huge win @ Texas Tech in OT.

Saturday wasn't a good day for the Pac-10. Kansas State took care of Southern Cal and then Colorado comes out of nowhere to win big @ UCLA. Ohio State (without Maurice Clarett) escaped Cincinnatti, and a huge loss for Georgia Tech as RB Tony Hollings is out for the season.

This week's big games:
Kentucky @ (9) Florida (-19 ½) (Don't think the Gators cover, but they do give the Wildcats their 1st loss.)

(18) Wash. St. @ Cal (NL) (Can Cal go to (4-0) against a tough Cougar team?)

(19) Nebraska @ (21) Iowa St. (Even) (The rankings and the line just look too weird for me.)

Miss. St. @ (20) LSU (-13 ½) (LSU needs to make a statement.)

(24) Oregon St. @ (22) So. Cal (-3) (Both teams need this game.)

Alabama @ Arkansas (Along with Auburn, these are 2 of the top 3 teams in the West.)

Last week's picks were (1-2). Overall, I'm (8-6) and have hit all 3 picks of the week. Va. Tech did the job for me last week in an all-defense game. Ole Miss was up 21, then had to win late, and FSU was up (45-3) before bumbling late.

This week, I like UNC (+3) at home vs. Georgia Tech, and Michigan (-7 ½) @ Illinois. My pick of the week is Penn State. They are (-8) at home against Iowa.

On to the NFL, where I'll give you some odd stats before I give you the six games to keep an eye on this weekend.

-- The Broncos are (+22) in points and are (3-0).

-- The Falcons are (+23) in points and are (1-2).

-- Carolina is (3-0), but the 3 teams they beat are a combined (0-8).

-- San Diego is (3-0), but the 3 teams they beat are a combined (2-7).

Games to watch this weekend:
Miami (-3) @ KC

Chicago @ Buffalo (-3)

Carolina @ GB (-7)

Cleveland @ Pittsburgh (-6)

Tennessee @ Oakland (-7)

NE (-3) @ SD

Last week, my picks were (2-2) and I have missed all 3 picks of the week. Overall, I'm (4-5). The Rams blew me away with their Monday night loss to Tampa Bay. Philly should have been the lock. New Orleans and New England were both close to going either way.

This week, I like the Rams (-12) at home vs. Dallas, TB (-7) @ Cincinnatti, and Denver (-7) @ Baltimore on Monday Night. My pick of the week is the Eagles. I don't care about the number (-20) vs. the Texans. This will get ugly.

The Baseball playoffs start next week and unless something odd happens, which is possible, these are the probable matchups:

AL: Yanks-Angels and A's-Twins

NL: Braves-Giants and D'backs-Cardinals

I like the Yankees and Braves, but this is really as open a year as I can remember. I think it's going to be great.

With football and baseball, this is going to be a great time of sports coming up, so enjoy. Plus, we've got the Ryder Cup this weekend. Talk at you next week.
