The top offensive lineman in North Carolina will be heading to Death Valley on Monday with his family to watch this year's Bowden Bowl. CUTigers.com has the latest on the 4-star prospect in this recruiting update.

OL R.J. Mattes Profile

6-6, 260 pound R.J. Mattes just finished another hot practice when he spoke with CUTigers.com earlier this week.

"We just got done with practice," he said. "It is going good. The heat has been hard. We have to take mandatory breaks for water. They make us keep our helmets off for a certain period of time."

Mattes helped lead Jay Robinson High (N.C.) to a victory last Friday night.

"The game went well. We won 23-7 over Hickery Ridge. The defense stepped it up the whole game. The offense wasn't good the first half. In the second half we played much better. We scored 16 unanswered points in the second half," said Mattes.

The four-star offensive lineman will travel to Clemson on Monday to watch the Bowden Bowl.

"Heck yeah, I'm coming to Clemson. I am coming with my mom, dad and my little sister. We are going up Monday. I don't think we have practice that day. Coach Napier said it will be crazy in Clemson that day so we are going to head down early."

The top lineman will also see another ACC opener this weekend.

"I am probably going to go to the State game against UCF on Saturday," said Mattes.

When asked if there have been any changes in his leaders, Mattes responded, "It is still about the same. My top five are still Clemson, South Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia.

"I have setup my official visit date for Virginia. I will be going on September 29."

The other official visit dates are not set, but Mattes plans to see a lot of games this fall.

"I am going to try to see a lot of games this year. It is going to be a fun year," said Mattes.

How important will the game day experience when Mattes decides on his college destination?

"It is not really that big of a deal. I want to go down and see games where I haven't been. Clemson will be amazing. I love going to college games and watching," replied Mattes.

What will be important to Mattes decision process?

"I will be looking at the players and the coaches. I will also look at playing time," replied Mattes.
