JackSmack: Issue #51

Well Tiger fans, we did lose 48-31 at Florida State, but I saw enough positives to look forward to our first Bowden Bowl win next year. To suggest anything else is rediculous. I will say this, the upset by Louisville the week before definitely did not help.

Besides Derrick Hamilton, our special teams were awful, but with Willie and all the young receivers back along with the defense working with John Lovett for a full season, I'm already excited for 2004. Not that this season is done. Although we have a lot of games left, I think we will play N.C. State for 2nd in the conference. This week, we're (-5) going to Virginia. I think we'll whip them, you can take that to the bank.

Nationally in college football, there were a lot of interesting results last week. Oklahoma and Texas squeaked by Missouri and Oklahoma State respectively, before their big showdown this weekend. Texas Tech won at College Station by one point in overtime because of 2 consecutive missed extra points. In the SEC, Georgia pulled out a tight one over Alabama in Tuscaloosa, while Tennessee needed 6 overtimes at home to get by Arkansas. Also, Ole Miss upset Florida (17-14) after Florida led (14-2) at the half. In the ACC, Wake surprised Georgia Tech by winning in Atlanta.

Penn State got a big win at Wisconsin and Notre Dame absolutely trashed Stanford. Wash. State got by Southern Cal in OT, and Washington got ripped at home by Cal.

This week's games are quite possibly about as big as you could get in early October:

(12) Florida State at (1) Miami (-12 ½)
(3) Oklahoma at (2) Texas (-3) in Dallas
(4) Virginia Tech (-8) at Boston College (Thurs)
(9) Tennessee at (6) UGA (-3)
(17) Penn State at (10) Michigan (-4 ½)
(11) N.C. State (-6 ½) at UNC
Texas Tech at (14) Iowa State (-6 ½)
(15) LSU at (16) Florida (-8 ½)
Michigan St. at (20) Iowa (-6)
Arkansas at (21) Auburn (-6)
Oklahoma State at (23) Kansas St. (-14 ½)
Cal at (24) USC (-12 ½)
(7) Oregon at (25) UCLA (-2 ½)

I missed last week for personal reasons, so it's time to get the picks kicking again. Overall in college, I'm (9-8) and (3-1) on picks of the week. This week, I like Pitt (+9) at Notre Dame, Mizzou (+8 ½) at Nebraska, N.C. State (-6 ½) at UNC, and I absolutely love my pick of the week: UGA (-3) over Tennessee.

On to the NFL, where we'll take a quick trip through the conferences:

AFC: Miami whips NE to get 1st place in the East as the Pats have lost 2 in a row. The Ravens hold on in a crazy one in Cleveland to get 1st in the weak AFC North. Jax beat the Eagles to tie Indy for 1st in the AFC South. In the West, you simply have 4 very solid teams with Oakland, Denver, Kansas City, and San Diego.

NFC: Behind an incredible showing by Brett Favre, the Pack took 1st place in the North. The Giants and Eagles are tied atop a solid NFC East, while NO and TB are also tied atop a solid NFC South. In the West, San Fran stayed ahead of surprising Arizona.

--The only undefeated team: Oakland (4-0).

--Winless teams: Cincinnatti, Minnesota, and St. Louis.

--I put this note up very many times over the last couple of seasons and it pretty much says that if you can consistenly run the ball, you're going to win:

Last week, 9 of the top 11 rusher's teams won.

This week's matchups to keep an eye on:

NO (-1) at Washington
Carolina at Dallas (-2)
Balt at Indy (-5 ½)
GB at NE (-4 ½)
KC at SD (-3)
Cleveland at TB (-7)
Miami at Denver (-3 ½)
SF (-3) at Seattle

On to my picks, where my slow start remained at (4-5) overall, and (0-3) on my picks of the week. This week, I love all three of my games. I like Jax (-2) at Tennessee, Oakland (-7) at St. Louis, but my pick of the week is Buffalo (-7 ½) at Houston.

On to a little baseball, where all 4 underdogs won in the 1st round. I said it was wide open, but no Yanks, no Braves, no D'Backs, and no A's. Wow! In the ALCS, I have to root for the Twins over the Angels, and I'm going to root for the Giants in the NLCS over the Cardinals because I'd like to see Bonds get a ring.

Above all else, have a great week, and go Tigers!
