Strong safety Maurice Nelson, considered by most experts to be the top defensive back in the Palmetto state this year, has now confirmed most of his official visits this winter. Clemson, Maryland, North Carolina, and Georgia will be the schools from which he'll base his final decision.
Nelson is having a solid year for Crestwood, known to be one of the toughest teams in the state of South Carolina. Here's what he had to say about his senior season and the ongoing recruiting process in our latest interview with him late Monday evening.
How are things going for you as you wrap up your senior season?
Nelson: Pretty good, pretty good. We've won 5 games on the year, we play down at Socastee.
Is Clemson still your leader right now?
Nelson: Yes sir they are.
Are there any other teams making a hard push for you?
Nelson: South Carolina, Georgia, Miami, North Carolina and Tennessee.
Have you set up official visits to those schools yet?
Nelson: Yes sir. I'll be at Georgia December 13th, Clemson January 10th, UNC January 17th, and Maryland January 24th.
Did you make it up Clemson for the game this past weekend?
Nelson: You know it was a game that came down to the wire, but they played well.
Did you talk to any of the coaches while you were there?
Nelson: Yes sir, I talked to Coach Stockstill, and Coach Hines and Coach Lovett. I talked to Coach Stock and Coach Hines before the game, and then to Coach Lovett afterwards.
What do you talk about with the coaches in those coversations?
Nelson: We talk mostly about the defensive schemes and what position they would want me to play at if I came to Clemson.
I take it the Tigers still like you as a rover right?
Nelson: Yes sir.
Did you happen to talk to any other recruits while you were there?
Nelson: Yes, I talked to Russell Hemby a good bit. We are pretty good friends.
Is he high on Clemson?
Nelson: I think if they offered him, yes.
Are you still going to wait to take all your official visits before you make a decision?
Nelson: Yes sir, I want to give everybody a fair chance.
Any comments from you on how you feel like Clemson has played this year?
Nelson: For the most part, I think they are playing pretty good, real good. They've really improved big time on defense, especially compared to last year. They played FSU real tough and then they just came up short against Virginia. That game was just one of those things, you know how it is.
We'd like to conclude by thanking Maurice for taking the time to speak with us.
