Last weekend junior running back Roderick McDowell visited Clemson for an unofficial visit.

No surprise there.

Many of the top juniors in the state have already done the same thing.

However only one junior in South Carolina has already gone public with a verbal commitment - Greenville's J.K. Jay.

Make that two now.

"That's right," McDowell said. "I actually committed to Clemson. Me and my family were up there talking with coach Powell this weekend. Then we told him that we wanted to talk by ourselves for a minute. We went into the other room and talked about it. We came back in and then I told coach Bowden I wanted to come to Clemson."

Why did the Palmetto standout decide he wanted to be a Tiger?

"One thing I like about Clemson is the academics. My style will fit in well at Clemson," said McDowell.

Roderick also made sure he got permission from his mother before making his commitment to the Tigers.

"My heart was telling me Clemson was a good place. My mom sat down with me. She told me if that is where my heart is to go ahead and do it,"

Why did the Sumter standout decide to make an early commitment?

"I feel happy that I have a scholarship to a great college. Now all of the pressure is off. I know where I am going and I can concentrate on my season next year," he said.

"One thing about Clemson is they have great athletes. People didn't think I would want to go to Clemson because they have so many good athletes. I feel like going to Clemson will bring out the best in me. That guy they got from Jacksonville will help me get better. We will practice together. One of us will shine. We will bring out the best in each other."

What strengths will McDowell bring to Clemson's backfield in 2009?

"I have a style that is my own. I am a shifty back. There are times where you think you have me, but you don't. I like how C.J. and Davis play. That is how I want to fit at Clemson," he said.

McDowell is the third verbal commitment for the Tigers in their 2009 recruiting class. Clemson also has pledges from OL J.K. Jay (Christ Church) and North Carolina native WR/RB Larry Raper. Top Stories
