Here's what head football coach Carl Franks had to say about the improvement of his team this year, the disappointing loss last week to N.C. State, and the quarterback situation at Clemson in his weekly press conference with the media.
On the Improvements this Year at Duke
One of the ways we managed to make improvements is through recruiting. We've done a pretty good job recruiting this year and moved them onto the field. Our coaching has been very good and our guys are getting into the weight room and getting stronger and our team is maturing. If you look at the stats from a year ago, we've improved our run defense, we've improved our running game, we've improved our turnover ratio. Overall, we are just a better football team, but we aren't near as good a football team as we can be yet.
As you go through a football season it's hard to hit an emotional peak every single game. You're a little more emotionally ready for certain games than you are others. Maybe coming off the way we played against N.C. State, there was a little bit of an emotional let down. I just don't think we were quite as focused and ready as we were before.

On Clemson's Quarterbacks
(Clemson) is playing Whitehurst a little bit more. We anticipate seeing both those guys. They both throw the ball pretty well. Their trying to find the right combination.
On this Week in Practice
We've had some pretty good practices so far, our team is looking forward to play on television. That certainly gives us some motivation knowing a lot of people will be watching and hopefully we won't have a week of our performance last week, but that remains to be seen.
On the Letdown Last Weekend
When you overanalyze a game like that you have to be careful. The bottomline is that they were outstanding compared to the way we played. They're a strong and physical football team. We were hanging on there early, and then somewhere it slipped away. Maybe after the punt return or not kicking field goals. They played a lot tougher than we did. They were a lot more physical than we were.
I was pretty disappointed with most areas of our football team. I don't know if there was that I was really pleased with or not. I was disappointed in our entire team. I was disappointed in myself and I was disappointed with the coaches. I think that's a fair assessment of the game.
I thought we had a good week of practice, but we were just not as ready as we have been.
