Florida DB Excited About Next Step

Future Clemson defensive back Carlton Lewis is working hard as he prepares for the start of his college career.

Lewis, along with his teammate, Rashard Hall, signed with Clemson in February out of St. Augustine High School (Fla).

"I have been working on workout plan," he said. "I am starting the summer workout plan now. But the main thing is I am just trying to get ready to compete."

The three-star defensive back has added some weight over the past few months.

"I got on a scale last Friday. I was about 200 pounds. I put on a little weight," said Lewis. "But we actually just got done with track. Our relay finished fourth in the state."

Clemson assistant coach Dabo Swinney recently stopped by St. Augustine and offered Lewis some advice for the coming season.

"Coach Swinney can't wait to get me on campus," he said. "I talked to him on Thursday. He came by the school. He was looking at some of our players. He talked about what I need to do. He told me I have a good chance of coming in and playing early. I was excited to hear that."

Several of Clemson's freshman DBs will be roommates this summer.

"I am going up on June 29," Lewis said. "I should be rooming with Rashard [Hall], Xavier [Brewer] and Spencer [Adams]. I talked to Xavier a little bit. We talked about what we are going to bring."

What is the Florida standout looking forward to the most about getting to Clemson?

"I am mainly just looking forward to the atmosphere. I want to play on the next level. I want to see how it is," replied Lewis.

Some have reservations as they prepare to leave for college, but not Carlton.

"I am not really nervous," he said. "I am excited. I get to play football in another state for a big time football program."

Lewis recorded 57 tackles and two interceptions as a safety and 39 receptions for 760 yards and nine touchdowns as a wide receiver during his senior season at St. Augustine High School. For his efforts he was named to the Florida Times Union All First Coast Team as a first-team selection.
