Rees Continues Strong Play

Early in Pearland's playoff game with Galveston Ball, center Trevor Rees hit teammate Steven Haffelder repeatedly on the helmet after Haffelder had run for a first down. However, it should have been Haffelder saluting Rees for opening several huge holes for the Oilers on Saturday night.

Offensive lineman Trevor Rees has had an unbelievable year for his team in Pearland, Texas and the senior center prospect continued his domination by helping lead Pearland High to a 21-11 win over Ball in a Class 5A Division II Region III bi-district playoff game this past weekend.

Pearland running back Steven Haffelder scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter and also scored on two one-yarders, including the clincher with 1:49 left in the game. All three scores were on quarterback sneaks behind Rees.

"It started last week when we had a long drive to win the game, and it carried over to this week," said Rees, a three-year starter and 113th ranked offensive lineman in country by "This week in practice, we worked on picking up blitzes. We had some bumps in the road in the third quarter, but we came back at the end and pulled through."

"Coach had a game plan. We wanted to wear them down with the run. Go outside at first and then come back in."

Brandon Roberson, one of the Houston area's top rushers, ended the contest with a game-high 136 yards on 29 carries. With Pearland (9-2) clinging to a 14-11 lead and facing a fourth-and-two, Roberson followed Rees' block for a five-yard gain to the Ball 16.

Haffelder later capped the 73-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run, also behind Rees.

"We moved the ball well on that drive," Rees said. "We wanted to dominate the line. Coach said if we dominated the line, then he'd give us a chance."

Rees, who looks to be a full qualifier with a 3.7 GPA and a 28 on ACT, now has offers on the table from Clemson, Northwestern, TCU, Rice, Pittsburgh, and Kansas.

He has already set visits to Northwestern on December 6th and to Clemson the weekend of January 10th. The Tigers are recruiting Rees as a center, with Coach Watts keeping in contact on the phone and through the mail on a weekly basis.
