Tigers Battle High Point Tonight

Tiger Basketball will play High Point University tonight at 7:00 PM in its first action away from The Civic Center of Anderson of the 2002-03 regular season. The game will be played at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC, but interestingly enough, Clemson will be the home team.

This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. Clemson will host two other Big South conference members this season, Liberty and Coastal Carolina.

Senior Walker Holt, a Greensboro native, will start Wednesday night along with Ed Scott, Chey Christie, Chris Hobbs and Sharrod Ford for the Tigers. Clemson (1-0) is coming off a 79-72 victory over Wofford on Sunday. Scott and Hobbs each had 19 while Ford had 12 points in the winning effort. Ray Henderson added eight points and 12 rebounds.

Jerry Steele is in his 31st year as head coach of High Point (2-0), which defeated Northern Arizona and Central Connecticut State to win the Mohegan Sun Classic last weekend in New Britain, CT.

The Panthers got 25 points from Danny Gathings and a stellar game from freshman guards Matt Anderson and Jeff Allen to knock off Central Connecticut State, 74-63, Saturday night in the championship game.

Central Connecticut went 27-5 a season ago, and returned four starters from that team. High Point's victory snapped a 12-game home winning streak and 17-game regular-season winning streak for the Blue Devils, who lost to Pittsburgh in the NCAA Tournament last season.

High Point is led in scoring by Virginia Tech transfer Danny Gathings, who is averaging 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game from his forward position.

Frontcourt teammate Dustin Van Weerdhuizen is averaging 17.0 points per contest. Joe Knight, the Big South Rookie of the Year in 2001-02, leads the backcourt with a 10.0 ppg average.
