Bowden:I told them I thought Maryland played well but that the reason we lost the game was in our locker room and not theirs. We had a fumbled punt. 80-yard touchdown called back. Personal foul penalty in the red zone. I'm not taking anything from them but any time you have two pretty good teams the team that self-destructs usually loses and that's what happened.
You offensive line seemed play well enough for you to win.
Bowden:I think we rushed for over 200 yards and when you do that you are pretty successful but we self imploded with penalties and mistakes.
Did you feel good at half with the lead you had and how well you played in the first half?
Bowden: I never usually feel real good at half because you play 60 minutes and not 30. We kept shooting our self in the foot with penalties. We kind of with stood an early barrage with the fumbled punt, the lateral [that we lost] and the penalties. We gave them some early points back there and didn't convert in the second half.
You had to feel at one point you were dominating the game, especially with your rushing attack.
Bowden: We did but you get give them credit for making adjustments in the second half. I'm more disappointed in the self-destruction from an offensive standpoint. One was alignment, one was a hold [on the big plays that were penalized.
It has to be shock to be where you are right now at 3-2 after being ranked at No. 9 in the preseason.
Bowden: Well there are seven games left. We have to line up and play 12. Surely it's discouraging for the players and for the fans.
Do you feel like you have a game like this every year?
Bowden: You never really anticipate having a game like this. I can't remember that many penalties late. The touchdown called back. We had a substitution penalty. The late hit down in the red zone. Those were so critical in the outcome of the game.
Do you re-evaluate your offense at all during the off-week in terms of personnel and scheme?
Bowden: Well, I think the biggest thing is No. 1 we have to start correcting the penalties that we had. Alignment errors. Late hit- that's more technique and fundamentals more than anything else. We had 372 yards and rushed for over 200.
What about the downfield passing game that was absent in the second half?
Bowden: No. But we threw one down there deep to Aaron and it got intercepted. That's what happens when you force it and they are playing soft.
Did you think about handing the ball off to James or C.J. on fourth down?
Bowden: Thought about it. But you have to worry handing the ball seven yards deep to get a couple of inches. We sneaked the ball against N.C. State and were successful. I thought about.
How do you think your team will respond after a loss like this?
Bowden: I think they'll respond. I can't remember that game where we had that many critical situations. It hasn't happened a whole bunch and it hadn't happened this year.
