Nowhere is that evident more than redshirt freshman Brandon Maye, Clemson's starter at the MIKE linebacker spot for nine games this season.
In his first year on the field, Maye is fourth on the team in total tackles with 71, while also recording four tackles for loss and two sacks.
Tuesday afternoon CUTigers.com had a chance to sit down and talk with Maye 1-on-1 about the season and also Saturday's game at Virginia for another edition of CUTigersTV:
Maye: It's awesome man to go out and fight and come away with a 'W.' That's always good to get your mindset right. The defense, we came out and played a pretty good game and we want to do it again.
And that's the key- handling success and following a win with another win.
Maye: Yes sir. Coach Dabo has been telling us the challenge is to come out and handle success and try to repeat it all over again.
What about growth at linebacker? Not only for you but for everybody else?
Maye: Yes sir. All I'm going to say is Coach Blackwell coaches us really hard. That's all I'm going to say about that one. But we were some newcomers this season and each and every week we have to grow. I like the progress so far.
Do you feel the pressure of having to win these last two games to get to a bowl game?
Maye: Yes sir. It's basically like a like a playoff for us. It's very important to me. I like to win, no question about it. And for this team right here, to work this hard in the weight room during the offseason and to keep coming and keep fighting and for coach Bowden and all the distractions- it would be real big for us to get to the postseason.
Talk about the challenge of facing this Virginia offense.
Maye: Very talented team. Quarterback is pretty good. The running back is hard-nosed running the ball. They got a good offensive line. Their wide receivers - they like to spread it around. It's a big challenge for us and we look forward to the challenge.
What about Dabo Swinney as he settles into this position now after a month?
Maye: From day one I've been all in. When he said that when we had the meeting - he said if you are all in come to the practice if not you can call it a day. But I've been in it since day one and I see more guys starting to have faith in him.
