Chavis Out; What Now?

JACKSONVILLE - With the news coming out Monday that former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Chavis is likely headed to run LSU's defense, what will the Tigers do now?

Just when everything appeared to be good to go on the John Chavis-to-Clemson front, everything changed. first learned Saturday night LSU was making a last-second pitch to the former Tennessee defensive coordinator and that a contract was being drawn up for his services.

However at the time, it was thought Chavis was No. 2 on the list behind UCLA defensive coordinator Dewayne Walker.

Turns out Chavis was in pretty good position all along.

LSU apparently is willing to pay Chavis more than $500,000 per year to be it's next defensive coordinator, sources in Baton Rouge tell after several behind the scenes meetings between Chavis and LSU head coach Les Miles within the last week.

Chavis, who was considered the leading candidate at Clemson to take over the defensive coordinator position vacated by Vic Koenning earlier this month, appears to now be off the table from the orange and white's perspective.

With that news, Dabo Swinney will have to explore other options in the coming weeks.

One of those options, sources tell, is Alabama assistant coach Kevin Steele.

Steele, a Dillion, S.C. native, currently serves as the associate head coach and head defensive coach with the Crimson Tide after being promoted by Nick Saban this past February.

He also served as Alabama's defensive coordinator in the 2007 season.

Steele has also coached at Nebraska (linebackers) and served as an assistant at Florida State, Tennessee, Oklahoma State and New Mexico State during his career.

Alabama is currently preparing for the upcoming Sugar Bowl against Utah, which means no movement could occur on this front until after that game on Friday.

Sources told earlier today an announcement could come on the defensive coordinator front as early as next Monday, but that was before the news was released on Chavis going to LSU.

Regardless, given the importance of recruiting, don't be surprised if an announcement is made sometime next week.

Current linebackers coach David Blackwell and outside linebackers/bandit coach Ron West will call Clemson's defense in the upcoming Konica Minolta Gator Bowl against Nebraska. Top Stories
