No quit in Korn

CLEMSON — Willy Korn makes no bones about it, he would love to know as soon as possible if he is the starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers or not.

However, he also wants a fair chance to prove he is that guy.

He admitted after Saturday's Orange and White game he would be somewhat upset if head coach Dabo Swinney named someone other than himself the starting quarterback before fall camp even began.

"I definitely would (be upset) without even seeing how I look in camp come August," Korn said. "I'm going to get a lot better from right now. I'm in a good place right now as far as how I played (Saturday), but I'm going to get 10 times better by the time fall camp rolls around."

That's quite possible since the former All-Star high school quarterback is still trying to get back his throwing motion following surgeries on his shoulder and collarbone during the off-season.

"I know where I want to be and where I want to go," he said. "I know I have a lot of work to do this summer, but I'm looking forward to it."

That's the kind of attitude quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Billy Napier wants to hear. He expects that kind of attitude from all of his quarterbacks this summer because he said that will be when the true test on who wants to be the starting quarterback begins.

"This was a good 15 days and it gave me an idea of where these guys are at, but there is so much time between now and September 5, I want to see who really wants to be our quarterback, that's what I want to see," he said. "I want to see who is going to be eating, sleeping and breathing it until we show up for our reporting date on August 3.

"I played that position. I know what it is about and there is a lot of work to be done. I challenge those guys to really have a great summer and preseason."

The only negative about the close battle between Korn, Kyle Parker and Michael Wade is the one-on-one work quarterbacks usually like to have with their receivers in the summer.

"You would like to know as soon as possible so you can start building some chemistry and some time with the receivers that you are going to be throwing to," Korn said. "It is kind of difficult when you are going with a different set of receivers every time we line up out there.

"Everyone has their different strengths and weaknesses and how they run routes and stuff so that would be nice to kind of gel with a group of receivers that you know you are going to be with."

Korn says he has no idea who Swinney and Napier will decide on. He feels all three of them have battled and worked hard this summer and he knows it is going to be a tight race when fall practice begins.

"I guess we will see how it plays out," he said. "I would like a decision to be made sooner rather than later just so you can work on the timing with the guys you're going to be playing with and not have to play musical chairs with the center so much.

"That would be ideal. I don't know if that will happen or not. I think the talk coming from Coach is we will see how it goes during camp. I don't anticipate it, but if a decision is made this summer, that will be nice."
