Defensive End Darryl Melvin has all the physical tools that garner immediate attention from major Division I programs. He also is sporting two years of experience in the Junior College ranks, which could make him an instant impact player.
According to Coach Anselmo, the attention is happening as we approach signing day and the program that lands his star's signature will feel his impact. "Darryl has all the skills and physical ability that coaches all over the nation are looking for these days. He is 6'6" and goes about 250 or 260. He has those slim hips that teams look for in DEs. He has some speed at that size too. He is a 4.6 kid who gets after it. Darryl is a playmaker. That's what coaches see in him."
Melvin's list of potential schools is as impressive as the athlete according to Coach Anselmo. "He has taken all his visits. NC State, Michigan State, Maryland and Clemson. He has been to all those and he just needs to decide."
With signing day approaching quickly, that decision will need to come soon. "He has a couple of weeks to get it done. Signing day is February 5th, so he will decide by then."
It is thought that Melvin will land in somewhere in the ACC on signing day. NC State and Maryland are thought to be leading for the All-American.
Melvin played his way onto the NJCAA All-American Team where he was voted second team Defensive End. He finished the season with 12 sacks for the year. He also was a stand-out at New Utrecht High School in 2001 where he was named to play for the New York All-Stars in the 2001 Outback Empire Challenge game.
We will continue to keep you updated on Darryl Melvin, right up through signing day.
