He will be a game time decision for Saturday's game versus Texas Christian and Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said he didn't participate in any team drills but looked better.
"He did some kicks and things like that. He's a little further along today," Swinney said.
The injury is one that Swinney believes will keep getting better with time.
"We're going to watch him in warm ups (on Saturday)," he said. "If he can go he can go. If not, we'll hold him. It's not a pie in the sky. He's certainly going to have a chance."
C.J. Spiller, who is battling turf toe, also practiced today and had a "really good day," Swinney said.
Although he didn't answer whether Hairston would line up in front of Texas Christian defensive end Jerry Hughes, who is expected to line up primarily on the right-side of Clemson's offense, Swinney did say all options are on the table.
Along with Hughes, the Horned Frog defense is very similar to the Tigers.
"Just the way they play," Swinney said. "They play relentless and very physical like our d. They force the issue, are aggressive, challenge your protections, challenge your routes, tackle well, literally it's like getting ready to go for a spring scrimmage."
Texas Christian plays out of a base scheme 4-3 and a 4-2-5 with a hybrid nickel linebacker. Swinney said they do a good job with pressures and the coverage behind it.
"It's not always cover zero. A lot of times it's pressure, cover two and they do a good job mixing that up. We'll have to be very sharp," he said.
Willy Korn is expected to take snaps under center Saturday as long as the game is progressing on schedule. He didn't play against Georgia Tech because of the early 24-0 hole.
"I hope to be able to get him in there again," Swinney said. "We're trying to build some experience for this football team at that position as much as we can. He did a fine job when he was in there the other night."
