Clemson picked up its fourth commitment for the class of 2011 when Mainland HS safety Cortez Davis committed to the Tigers on Saturday after the 38-3 win over Wake Forest.

Davis, a high school teammate of current 2011 Clemson commit RB Marlin Lane, said Saturday's game left quite an impression on him, but his friendship with Lane was also critical in his decision.

"I've always watched Clemson and really liked them," Davis told CUTigers on Sunday. "Marlin is one of my closest friends. I wanted to be with him too.

"But I really like Clemson—the coaching staff and the players."

Davis is 6-4, 180 pounds. He believes that he's being recruited to play corner. If he doesn't end up playing at the corner, he'd like to play either free safety or wide receiver.

So far this season he's recorded four interceptions, 23 tackles and a touchdown. He had 46 tackles as a freshman with seven interceptions. As a sophomore season he had 36 tackles, with three for a loss and four interceptions through 11 games. That year, the Mainland defense didn't allow more than 14 points against them all season. Davis was named All-County (Orlando Sentinel), All-Area News-Journal.

His other offers included Oregon, West Virginia, Florida State and Florida International. Davis said that he's not sure if he'll be taking visits to other schools.

Lane said he'll take all of his official visits.

"I'm still solid with Clemson though," he said.

With a bye week on Friday, Davis, Lane and two other Mainland teammates arrived to Clemson on Friday morning. They went to Rock the ‘John on Friday night and the game on Saturday.

"We spent time with players and coaches before the game and after," Lane said.

It was after the game in Coach Dabo Swinney's office when Davis committed to Clemson.

Along with Lane, Davis joins Brandon Ellerbe and DeShaun Williams in the class of 2011 players that have committed to Clemson.
