CLEMSON -- Clemson running back C.J. Spiller has been named National Offensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Foundation for his performance at Miami (FL).
The Walter Camp Foundation selects a national offensive and defensive player of the week each week during the season, then names a national offensive and defensive player of the Year and an All-America team at the conclusion of the season.
Spiller received the honor for his performance in Clemson's 40-37 overtime victory at eighth-ranked Miami (FL) on Saturday. Spiller had a Clemson record 310 all-purpose yards, as he had 125 on three kickoff returns, 104 yards on six receptions and 81 yards on 14 rushing attempts. He scored on a 90-yard kickoff return and a 56-yard pass from quarterback Kyle Parker.
Spiller's 310 all-purpose yards tie for the most in a game by any player in FBS Division this year.
Derrick Locke of Kentucky had 310 against Louisville on September 19 of this year.
Spiller's performance brokethe previous Clemson record of 282 yards by Justin Miller at Florida State in 2004.
Spiller is now first in the nation in all-purpose running yards per game with an average of 208 yards per game. He is also third nationally in kickoff return average with a 38.2 figure and is tied for first in kickoff returns for touchdowns with three.
His 90-yard kickoff return at Miami was the sixth of his Clemson career,an ACC record, and it was his seventh total kick return for a score as a Tiger. That gave him the ACC record for overall kick returns for scores. He and Steve Suiter of Maryland had six apiece entering
In addition to his Walter Camp Award this week, Spiller was also named the National Kickoff Returner of the Week by College Football
Performances Awards. It was the second time this year he had been honored by that website.
Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel has been named National Defensive Back of the Week for his performance at Miami (FL) by the College Performance Awards.
The website honors players each week based on performance at various positions.
McDaniel had two interceptions, including one that he returned 23 yards for a touchdown in Clemson's 40-37 overtime victory at eighth ranked Miami. McDaniel also had seven tackles in the game. He now has seven interceptions in seven games this year and is tied for the national leader in interceptions with Rahim Moore of UCLA, who also has seven interceptions in seven games.
McDaniel's 23-yard return for a touchdown in the second half was the first touchdown of his career and it was the first interception return
for a score by a Tiger since Chris Clemons had one against South Carolina State in 2008.
