Upstate LB checks on Clemson

This talented linebacker prospect from the upstate is starting to draw interest from a number of top schools after an oustanding junior season.

LB Mike Rose Profile

Simpsonville-Hillcrest HS 2011 defensive end/linebacker Mike Rose was pleasantly surprised to see Clemson knock off Florida State 40-24 last Saturday when he was on hand in Death Valley along with nearly 100 other prospects.

"Florida State came out strong and didn't finish as good as they started," he said.

A fan of the stadium and seeing the Tigers run down the hill before kickoff, Rose recently told CUTigers that last Saturday's game is the only one he's been to this season. It was his second trip to see a game in Tigertown as a recruit--he was in for last year's game versus S.C. State.

"I've been trying to focus on my grades and playing ball. Next year, I'll be taking plenty of trips," Rose said.

He thinks a trip to Alabama could be in the works for the season too.

Though he's yet to receive an offer, one could be coming from Clemson soon.

"The coaches are talking to me. They said they're going to come after me hard," Rose said.

A do-it-all player at Hillcrest, he believes that outside linebacker could be his position at the collegiate level. For Hillcrest, Rose plays WILL linebacker and running back. He also returns kicks.

He said he's drawing attention from Northwestern, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida State, UCLA and most schools from the ACC and SEC.

"I'm really liking Clemson, Florida State and Virginia," Rose said.

Though he's unsure of when a decision would be made, he knows what he's looking for from the next level.

"I definitely can't go too many miles from home," Rose said. "My major is going to be in sports medicine. I want to go somewhere that's good in that. I want to be in a defense where I can roam around, maybe in a 3-4."

This season, Rose said he's made around 55 solo tackles and 50 assists, has nine sacks, blocked five field goals and two punts and forced a fumble. He's picked up 300 yards in kick returns and rushed for three touchdowns.

Hillcrest plays Irmo and running back Mustafa Greene in the first-round of the AAAA Division I playoffs on Friday.

"I'm ready to go out there and bust (Greene) in his face," Rose said. Top Stories
