OLB/DE high on Clemson

One of several 2011 Clemson prospects included on Scout.com's spring names to watch list recently picked up an offer from Notre Dame. The outside linebacker/defensive end will be receiving a visit from the Clemson coaching staff next month.

A.C. Reynolds High School (Asheville, N.C.) junior outside linebacker/defensive end Ben Councell recently told CUTigers Clemson, Auburn and South Carolina are all close to offering.

The offer from Notre Dame brings his total count to five, joining Maryland, N.C. State, East Carolina and Duke.

"(Clemson) sends me stuff in the mail, I've taken three trips down, they call every once in a while," Councell said.

Defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks, Councell's main recruiter to Clemson, told him that he likes the measurables. Now Brooks wants to see a few things on the field and in person before giving Councell an offer from Clemson.

"They like my film. They just want to see it first-hand," he said. "That offer could be in the summertime. That's what they've said to me."

"They just want to see how I move on the field. That's why he wants to come to practice. He wants to see lateral speed and how I get off blocks. That's mainly what he's going to be looking at."

Councell has been down to Tigertown several times, twice for non-recruiting trips and two other times as a recruit: the Virginia game last fall and for junior day earlier this spring.

He keeps coming back for good reason.

"(Clemson) is definitely up there towards the top. I'm just interested and ready for my senior to go on an official visit to see what's going on," Councell said. "I like the football program. It's an excellent program. I'd like to know a little more about the school. They went over it generally on the junior day.

"I just like everything about it. It's close. It's about an hour and a half from Asheville. My parents like that it's close. It's definitely up there."

Auburn, N.C. State and South Carolina are also candidates for an official visit later this fall. Notre Dame could be too.

Councell talked about his two recent trips to Auburn and N.C. State.

"I really liked (Auburn). That treated me really nice. That was a really nice one. I got to see State. I was really excited about that," he said. "I haven't gotten to see Clemson in the past couple of months, so I want to see some more."

A decision could be made sometime this summer or during his senior season.

"I'm keeping everything on the table…but I'm trying to get it out of the way before the season so it's not a distraction," Councell said.
