AztecReport.com hands out grades for the San Diego State players as they took on San Diego Christian.
San Diego State 91 San Diego Christian 57
Xavier Thames – 26 mins, 9 pts, 3 rebs, 2 ast, 0 blks, 1 stls, 2 TO
Thames left the game early due to a bruised jaw that Steve Fisher later called a cut in the mouth. He could have returned but did not due to the score of the game. His defensive pressure from end line to end line was felt on this night. (C+)
Chase Tapley – 26 mins, 18 pts, 6 rebs, 5 ast, 3 blk, 3 stl, 2 TO
Double-deuce continues to perform in every aspect. He made half his shots, rebounded the ball, passed up a good shot for a great shot and got busy on the defensive end. (A)
Jamaal Franklin – 29 mins, 28 pts, 12 rebs, 4 ast, 3 blk, 1 stl, 3 TO
The future pro came to play after a disappointing game against Syracuse. Franklin dropped 28 points by tying his career high with 10 field goals. Also tied his shot blocking record with three. He was active and aggressive, exactly what you want out of your best player. (A)
J.J. O'Brien – 24 mins, 2 pts, 2 rebs, 3 ast, 1 blk, 2 stl, 2 TO
It was a quiet night for J.J. who didn't put up numbers but did make an impact. He was active on the glass as he crashed the offensive glass at every opportunity, keeping numerous balls alive for his teammates to bring in the board. (C+)
Deshawn Stephens – 21 mins, 9 pts, 8 rebs, 0 ast, 0 blk, 2 stl, 0 TO
Stephens looked like a monster against the NAIA opponent, as it should be. He did majority of his work in the first half with 9 points on 3-for-5 shooting and 6 rebounds with 5 coming from the offensive end. The senior left a lot of points on the board by missing 6 of 9 free throws. (B)
James Rahon – 16 mins, 9 pts, 0 rebs, 0 ast, 0 blk, 0 stl, 0 TO
The funk continues. Things looked positive after the game against Syracuse but a 0-for-6 outing from downtown will take a hit to the shooters confidence. (D)
Dwayne Polee – 20 mins, 8 pts, 6 rebs, 1 ast, 1 blk, 1 stl, 2 TO
Polee saw some extra action with Winston Shepard suspended and the game turning into a blowout. He was active and efficient in his minutes with half of points coming from the line and the two buckets were at the rim. Activity on both ends will only help him increase his PT. (B)
Skylar Spencer – 14 mins, 7 pts, 1 rebs, 0 ast, 1 blk, 0 stl, 1 TO
The freshman looked like a freshman. He was pushed around down low but that comes with the territory of his growing pains. Spencer is already in much better physical shape than he was before he stepped on the SDSU campus. (C+)
1) SDSU crashed the glass all night long, outrebounding San Diego Christian 31-16 in the first half including 13 offensive rebounds.
2) San Diego State struggled once again from the outside (4-for-19; 21%) and at the line (23-for-39; 59%). This team will be scary once they can hit a jump shot.
3) A game after recording 14 steals, the Aztecs had a season-high 15 more Tuesday night.
