New Mexico Tops Rams, 72-60

Colorado State University's men's basketball team couldn't shake the affects of a cold-shooting night and fell to host New Mexico, 72-60 Saturday night in Mountain West Conference competition.

Colorado State, 10-16 overall, is back in action Monday night on the road at Air Force. Tipoff time in Clune Arena is 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the Colorado State Sports Network including flagship station KIIX, 1410 AM, in Fort Collins.

Colorado State had taken a 10-7 lead just over six minutes into the game on Jon Rakiecki's three-pointer.

But the Rams would go 6:44 before they scored again - on a free throw by Brian Greene - by which time New Mexico had run off eight straight points and led, 15-11. Greene's basket with 6:19 to play in the first half was the Rams' first goal in 7:21.

UNM widened its lead to a dozen, 33-21, at halftime and led by as many as 18 in the game. But Colorado State cut the lead to nine with 2:52 to go in the game on two free throws by Rakiecki. Colorado State would come no closer.

The Rams made 18 of 49 field goals in the game, 37 percent. Greene led the Rams with 12 points while guard Andy Birley added 11, the only Rams in double figures. Freshman Matt Williams led the Rams with six rebounds.

New Mexico's Ruben Douglas took game honors with 30 points, 16 in the second half. The Lobos have now beaten the Rams 14 consecutive times.
